anyone notice how socially awkward varconi was? and his wife "olga" who could barely talk... damn those crazy nerds

[/ QUOTE ]

Is it just me or does anyone else think that if Varconi didnt win the world series he would have made the news by going postal. I mean if you saw when he won, he had been recently fired from his job and for some reason everyone seems to ignore the guy. No one ever mentions he was the first amateur to win, not moneymaker. Im just saying the fact that he won probably saved a few lives in the office where he used to work.

Moneymaker wasn't the first amateur to win, neither was Varkoyni.

See Hal Fowler.

The title of "first amateur to win the WSOP where the televised events featured hole cards" isn't really relevant enough to bring up.

I agree with that, but then again look at the big deal they made out of moneymaker. I mean his win really boosted poker. Thats why I thought it mattered.

I tuned in just in time to see Helmuth getting his head shaved. Why did they do that? Did he lose a bet or something?

At the beginning of the broadcast (maybe 1/4 in) he says if Varkoni wins then he would shave his head. They let Robert do it instead!
