Default Luxor vs Tropicana

My friends are planning a trip and these two are the only casino hotels with availability in their price range. Any recommendations on which one to choose? They'll gamble a little but amenities and room quality are more important.

Thanx

I stayed at the Tropicana back in April. It was very standard, no amenities or anything. The rooms aren't terrible, but they're just basic hotel rooms. The casino is also unexceptional. The Luxor on the other hand has an awesome casino, and I love the poker room there. I have a feeling the rooms are probably typical too, but they'll have much better views. On the other hand, the Tropicana has better location and is located slightly more middle strip (Luxor is deep South). Overall, though, I'd pick the Luxor.

when are they going?

FWIW

Luxor is a newer hotel, and has the 'glitz' of a theme hotel.

Trop is older and used to be one of the better properties.

Luxor is probably a bit nicer overall -- but not hugely.

Personally, I like the shows at Tropicana better, and the pool is probably nicer there.

End of the day, it's a tossup -- do you want new glitz or old vegas?

I stayed at the tropicana on my last visit, although the luxor is probably a nicer and newer hotel, I would stay at the trop for the following reasons:

-it is on the corner which has four overhead walkways, so easy acess to everything
-The MGM, New york new york and excalibur are all very very close
-I don't konw this for sure but would be willing to bet that the trop has a nicer pool

The tropicana is not nearly as nice as the luxor, but for vegas standards the luxor is not that nice. I have also heard absolute horror stories about the luxor poker room, but have never played there myself.

If you do not mind staying off the strip, try the Orleans- Good Poker room, cheap and nice rooms, two tournaments everyday. Just my 2c

The Luxor room is tiny and filled with smoke and I ran into two dealers that seemed to have no idea what they were doing. I had to help them with the action a few times. The players are horrible too, but I would find a better room nearby.

Odd comment, the Luxor room is non-smoking.

I was there last week and the Luxor no-limit game was pure money. Full of newbies and drunks and at $50 max buy in, easy to play. See my review elsewhere.

As for which hotel, Luxor hands down. Trop is old and crappy and not really that much closer to MGM, etc. You're talking about 5-10 minutes of walking time. Ask for a room in the tower, they are excellent.

As for poker, the Lux has 2-4 and 1-1-2NL (50 max buy in) and 2 tournaments a day (they also have lessons and a 1-2 prison poker game for newbies). The Excalibur is a quick walk and has 1-3, 2-6 spread limit games and a stud game too. Mandalay Bay is another quick walk and has 4-8 and higher. MGM is across the road (10 minute walk max) and has everything.

The poker room is huge but full of cranky old rocks and locals. And it only costs you $20 to get anywhere on the strip (unless you take their shuttle). You're friends will hate you if you stay at the Orleans.

(Unless your friends are cranky old rocks on social security.)

Yes, but you can smoke right on the rail, which is wide open. If you are on a table near the rail the smoke can be quite thick.

Btw, i choose the trop, but not for any reason listed in this thread.

Most of the rooms have mirrors on the ceilings...
