Rummy 500 skills

My roomates and I play Rummy 500 very, very competitively. Does anybody have any tips and hints for the game?

1 rule that we don't play (despite my urgings, since apparently it's a steadfast rule of the game) is that you can't pick up the top card on the pile without making a rummy out of it.
