A problem with basketball...No special position
Hockey has the goalie
Football has the quarterback Baseball has pitchers and to some extent catchers. Basketball doesnt have that one unique position. I think this hurts them in some ways. rJ |

Re: A problem with basketball...No special position
I think this is wrong because, at least in the hockey example, sure, it's a position that is a bit different then the other positions, it's not like the fan base is based on the goalie. There are a couple of great goalies that people are fans of, but fans don't go to the game to see the shots stopped, the go to see them get in.
Baskteball does have "The Big Man" which everyone seems to enjoy. I don't really care to watch any pro basketball, just something about it doesn't appeal to me. Perhaps because I live in Pittsburgh where there is no team, but I really enjoy watching college hoops, a whole lot, it's fun to watch Pitt play, especially since they've been good for the last couple of years. |

Any bball coach will tell you that point guard is a special position, incredibly unique as compared to the other four spots on the floor.

I think this hurts them in some ways. [/ QUOTE ] which ways are those? I would say the NBA is even more "superstar" focused than the other pro leagues...guys like Kobe, Shaq, etc get as much attention, or more, than any other 'specialized' position like QB or pitcher...the fact that they don't have a special position doesnt mean much. |

Re: A problem with basketball...No special position
I dont really know exactly what i was saying as you can tell by the way it was written. It was just a half thought that i was hoping the forum could fill for me.
I think its good for a sport to have a position that is so focused on where that player can win you the game. Of course Kobe can go win you a game, but theres just something different in the make up of these players in spotlight positions. Im sure that didnt clear much up. rJ |
