Default AJo - Call Call Call

Live 6/12 game at Hollywood Park (9 Handed)

I have A[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img]J[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] in MP.

UTG calls, UTG+1 calls, I raise, MP2 calls, 2 folds, Button calls, SB 3-bets, All call to me, I call.

Some quick notes on SB. He is young guy, about my age, who bought in a little short-stacked(<10BB) but hasn't been out of line yet. The only winner he has shown down was AQ that he raised preflop and bet all the way to the river where he hit his Q.

Flop: J[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img]5[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img]5[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] (18SB)

SB bets, 3 folds, I have 6 chips in my hand ready to raise, but as I get ready to act, the two other players behind me fold out of turn. I figure this is now a heads up way ahead or way behind situation so I call.

Turn: 10[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] (10BB)

SB bets, I call (intending to call any non-K river).

River: 4[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] (12BB)

SB bets, I call.

Thoughts?

I think you played it fine. As you said you're either way ahead or way behind.

My current thought is "why is a King special?" What about a Queen or a Jack?

Hey shant,

The pot should be 2 BB's bigger. You really need to raise the turn or river. The turn is best.

Explain, Why isn't the call-call-bet if checked to approach best here?

Simply because you have the best hand the solid majority of the time. SB doesn't get out of line apparently, so calling semi-cold PF with a 5 won't happen often. The turn gives AK and AQ, which he's likely to put you on after you just call the flop, a gutshot and overs draw that many aggressive players will raise with, so he's less apt to fold to your raise. Not that I expect him to fold a Jack anyway, but it will give him more mental justification for calling down, being able to put you on hands that he beats rather than only being able to beat a bluff. It's true this is a way ahead or way behind situation, but you're going to be way ahead the solid majority of the time, and he's not going to fold the times he's drawing to 3.

Yeah, his opponent may be drawing with 7 outs and with a pot size of 10 BB it is necessary to raise the turn.
My mistake. I guess it's pretty obvious why my only skill is game selection

Very good point, you're probably right but i'm still not convinced I would feel comfortable raising it on the turn. I mean, he's in the SB and seems reasonably tight. Lets say he 3-bets AK, AA-TT. On the turn, AA to TT 17 ways and AK 12 ways. Am I way out on this, maybe i'm not seeing it in the right light

Whoa. Okay, I'm a dip. I thought everybody just called your PF raise. Ignore me. I think your line is fine.

This thread got me thinking. If you can fold to a threebet you loose the same as calling down when you're behind but at the same time you charge your opponent when he's drawing as long as you bet a safe card on the river and check otherwise. But if he will autobet on the river regardless it must be better to call down. I used to call down without thinking here but now there are birds singing in my head...
