Is the reason you check the flop that you deliberately try to keep the pot small?

I think you played it well, a bet on the flop wouldn't be a bad thing too like Freudian said. However it does leave you open to a raise from a draw. It's just there's so many damn people in this pot that I think you do have to protect your hand a little.

Because there are so many people in the hand and the pot is so small, leading out doesn't really protect your hand here. If you get called, you're going to hate almost every turn and the pot will be larger with you OOP, committing you to more chips if you decide to continue to "protect"."

Well he is the BB. Probably holding a 5 and some other random card. The river simply gave him a straight.

3 opponents is not optimal in my view to play for set value which suggests a preflop raise. Thin that herd I say.

I would raise preflop, but, if I didn't, I would play it just how you did, especially vs a good opponent.

Look guys this isn't your typical dork.
He's a very solid well known player capable of having anything here.
If the flop isn't two flush a fold becomes a more viable, but still poor decision IMO.
