I thought A2 was still in his range. For what it's worth, after the hand he told his buddy "I don't think I needed that extra 2", so he had me on AK, and therefore would have 3bet with A2. It is 6 times more likely for him to hold A2 vs. 22 on this board.

he could have meant: "on the flop, i didn't think i needed the other 2."

What hand do you think he read you for on the flop? AK? If so why then why is he checkraising with A2? Do you think your bet on the turn convinced him you had AK? I don't get it unless you believe your bet on the turn convinced him you had AK. I'm perfectly willing to believe that the BB was narrow minded enough to put you on AK and not entertain the possibility of AA or KK but I'm not sure why you believe he put you on AK for certain. I think what Gabe stated was probably true.
