I don't get basketball?!

Player with the ball dribbles ball in to defender trying to prevent him from scoring. Defensive player gets called for a foul. Announcers watching the play think its offensive foul.. What gives?

It just seems like a lot of calls are very subjective. How many times did Karl Malone get the ball and run into someone and drive an elbow to their jaw only to have a foul called on that player? It makes no sense.
