Default Re: Playing Poker on a 30\" Monitor

I was constructing an Inspiron 9300 so I just upgraded to it. The upgrade cost me $200 so it's roughly worth the 200 plus how much the original card costed (no idea how much but it was a ATI MOBILITY™ RADEON® X300 64MB). I am buying this 30 inch monitor the day it comes out (you sure it comes out on the 22nd? Read somewhere it was the 21st).

you're right. comes out the 21st. and it's called the 3007WFP, as they're apparently changing the model name so they can change around the 2001 (now 2005) and 2405 as well. I wonder if they're doing away with 2001FP's. that would suck. that would mean the minimum for 4 tabling with no overlap would be 2405WFP (1920x1200). not sure if they'd actually do away with the 2001FP though. the poker world wouldn't allow it

also, I've been reading and I'm not sure you'd be able to run it off a $200 video card. it needs dual-DVI support. seems like NVidia GeForce 7800 GTX is the card to run it and that goes for $570. another card can run it, you just won't be able to use it at 2560x1200. this sucks

astro, do you know much about monitors?

$570 video card doesnt sound right. 128MB video card sounds right and thatll run you under $100. i cant see dell releasing a monitor like that that requires a $570 video card.

i dont know about brightness but screen wise looking at the 30" monitor is like looking at 2 2001fp's without the line in the middle. i dont see why youd have to move further back to see it.

i currently have 2 2001fps and want to up it to 4. i was contemplating buying a 30" monitor instead of 2 more fps but i think saving a few dollars makes buying the smaller monitors better.

the 30" monitor will be much nicer for watching tv and playing video games on though, so it has other practicalities to it.

im waiting for the 60" monitor to come out!

well I have done a bit of research around the internet, and there are 2 things it needs to run 2560x1200 that most video cards don't have. one is the actual support of that resolution. even higher end models don't support that big. your $100 almost definitely doesn't. most of the sites I've been able to find information on are gamer sites, and they presumably have pretty good graphics cards. the other is it requires dual-DVI which is not supported on most cards, and not on older cards, even high end ones.

I like your plan for 4 monitors though. I'm assuming you wouldn't play on the top 2 for the most part though, right?

Very few video cards support 2560x1600, and at this point it is only the really high end (read: expensive) ones...

The amount of video RAM isn't particularly important if the video card and driver do not support the resolution. Perhaps existing cards can either use a driver upgrade or BIOS flash to support 2560x1600, but I'm not sure.

When I actually spoke to Dell support and I verified the fact that the 2560 X 1200 resolution would definetly work with this video card. This video card is the highest upgrade possible for the laptop and I made sure before I ordered it like 4 days ago that the 30 inch monitor with the 2560X1200 resolution would be compatible with it. I actually saved my conversation with one of the support people for future reference, so here is the full convo (tried to clean it up and make it as readable as possible):

2:04:33 PM XPS Rep Marquita: Thank you for choosing Dell's Digital Home XPS Experience, my name is {Marquita}, I will be your personal assistant today. Give me a moment to review your concern. Please don't go away.

2:04:47 PM You: ok

2:04:51 PM You: my full question is

2:05:05 PM You: I'm considering buying a top of the line Inspiron 9300 laptop. I chose to include the 256MB Geforce 6800. With this video card, is it possible to link my laptop to the new 30 inch monitor that Dell is coming out with on the 21st (http://www.engadget.com/entry/1234000240070831/)?
If so, what kind of cable do I need to connect the laptop to the monitor? I need the full 2560X1600 resolution so I'd like to know exactly what I need to make this work.

2:05:23 PM You: err that link is bad, try this: http://www.engadget.com/entry/1234000240070831/

2:07:15 PM You: what exactly do i need to buy to make that laptop connect with that 30 inch monitor?

2:07:22 PM XPS Rep Marquita: I don't have access to that information to know if it is compatible, because that is in the electronics and accessories department, but you can hook it up to the 9300 with the video card you got using the DVI or the VGA ports that come on there, you wouldn't need anything else

2:08:01 PM You: ?

2:08:10 PM You: so you arent sure if the laptop will work with the 30 inch monitor?

2:08:46 PM XPS Rep Marquita: you can hook it up to the 9300 with the video card you got using the DVI or the VGA ports that come on there, you wouldn't need anything else

2:09:42 PM You: are u saying that i can using the DVI or VGA ports that come with the laptop?

2:09:56 PM XPS Rep Marquita: exactly\

2:10:25 PM You: Are you 100% sure?

2:10:25 PM XPS Rep Marquita: I am not support

2:10:27 PM XPS Rep Marquita : though

2:10:33 PM XPS Rep Marquita: I am XPS sales chat

2:10:45 PM You: so you know exactly what you're talking about?

2:11:23 PM You: so what cable would i need to buy to connect the laptop to that 30 inch monitor?

2:13:10 PM XPS Rep Marquita: You need no cable, with the video card you are getting it has those ports to hook the monitor straight up into it

2:14:14 PM You: and the 2560X1600 resolution on the monitor will work?

2:14:23 PM XPS Rep Marquita: Yes it will

2:14:32 PM You: and the cable comes with the monitor

2:14:37 PM You: i just hook it straight up to the laptop and ill be all set?

2:14:47 PM XPS Rep Marquita: It's ports on the video card you are getting

2:15:07 PM You: ok, im kind of dumb with computers

2:15:13 PM You: that basically confirms what im saying, yes?

2:15:22 PM You: the cable with the monitor just goes right into the laptop

2:15:31 PM You: i dont need to buy a docking station, or a special cable from dell?

2:15:57 PM XPS Rep Marquita: No

2:16:14 PM XPS Rep Marquita: it has those ports on the 6800 card, and will be already on the system

2:16:29 PM XPS Rep Marquita: which you can use to plug the monitor straight up to

2:16:45 PM You: ok, so im gonna purhase this laptop today, and then ill purchase the monitor on the 21st, and thats ALL i need

2:16:54 PM XPS Rep Marquita: right

granted that you have recourse in case it doesn't work, Marquita obviously has no clue what she's talking about and you might want to do a little research. I read stuff where people mentioned that card specifically and that it doesn't support 2560x1600. the 128 MB GeForce 6800 supports only 2056xsomething (don't remember what). maybe this one does 2560x1600. maybe call NVidia? can't hurt. I can't find it online. maybe there is no max? if I could get one for $200 that would be great
