I\'d like to be a dealer
I deal the home games where I play. I know the rules, I know how to shuffle, I know how to handle problems. I have a background in retail and customer service. I am good at math. And of course I love poker. Seems to me I'd make a decent dealer. How does one go about getting into that side of the business? How is the pay? Is there room for advancement or is it a decent but dead end job?

Re: I\'d like to be a dealer
I don't know much about professional dealing, but I do know that you have to go through a fairly rigorous training and most of the stuff you listed you'll have to relearn their way. And, as for the pay, I'm pretty sure it's crappy -- it's like a waiter or waitress: the money is in the tips.
I would guess you start at the .25-.50 tables where a big tip is like 10 bucks and, if you do well, end up at the $5,000-$10,000, making more than you do now. So I would guess that there is something of a corporate ladder to climb. Kinda weird one, but one indeed. The biggest pro to working in dealing is improving your poker. Many dealers turned pro because they improved their reading abilities and poker sense. Just some thoughts. You might google some dealer schools or something. |

[/ QUOTE ] First off, there are rarely any .25/.50 games left in this country if any at all, second off, anything above 30/60 won't make you any tips at all (maybe a buck or 2 an hour if you're lucky). Just because there is big money, doesn't mean they tip well. Trust me, I've dealt the bigger games, I'd prefer to deal 3/6 and 4/8 limit and restricted buy in NL games such as 2/5 and 5/10 NL for the best money. edit: spelling, it's late and I'm tired. |

Re: I\'d like to be a dealer
I don't know about anywhere but Vegas. Every hand dealt is a dollar to you in a 2/4 game. Again, in Vegas , Tip jobs,, Waitress, Bartender, Valet, Dealer(poker) are some of the most coveted jobes in the city. Can't speak for wannabe's like AC, riverboats etc.

Re: I\'d like to be a dealer
Here is what I make and as much information as I can provide. Hope this helps. I deal in Colorado in 2/5 and 5/5 Hold Em structured/non structured games. I deal four days a week, averaging 9 to 10 hours a shift. My goal is to make 300 a night in tips. I almost always achieve this. I get payed 4.50 an hour. My second goal is to walk away with 2,400 take home every two weeks. I achieve this about 70% of the time. My hourly does not cover taxes and sometimes it is less then 2,400. I average 20 hands a down according to the casino. I have the benefit of using automatic shufflers. My casino protects the dealers very well and allows me to concentrate on dealing which in turn increases my profit. The one thing I want to stress about dealing is that there is NO job satisfaction. You are there to make money. It is what you do on your days off that makes the job satisfying. Hope that last line made sense If you have any more questions about dealing feel free to ask. Remember, my example may be atypical of what Vegas/Atlantic City may have to offer. I have no experiance there dealing.
