Default Tropicana AC a dump?

I'm staying at the Trop in a few days instead of my usual stay at the sweet, sweet Borg (basically because I wasn't up for the waits at the Borg this time and because for once the Trop was as cheap as teh Borg's poker rate) and, having read some really terrible reviews of the hotel/rooms on the internet (after I booked, cos that's the way I like to operate ), I'm wondering if I've made a big mistake. I realised that it wouldn't be as nice as the Borg, but some of the reviews make it sound like a real dump. I'm staying in the old bit, not the Havana tower, which is apparently particularly grim.
What should I expect? Is it that bad a hotel? (NB I'm interested in thoughts on it as a hotel, not the cardroom).

I stayed there last summer and it was fine. Never stayed at Borgata, so I can't factor in the letdown effect. I also ran great when I played, so maybe that accounts for my view.

The Taj hotel rooms are a dump. Trop was just fine, even in the old rooms.

I think the Taj rooms are better then the Trop but they're all better then Super 8.

What rate did you get and how?

I'm going tomorrow night. The reservation w/ Poker rate is $49. After taxes and all that, it's about $62. If you are going just to play poker and sleep, the rooms are fine. But if it's a romantic getaway, you should be shelling out cash for the new rooms anyway. The biggest problem with the room is the fact that the lights outside are so bright. With the blinds closed, it's not so bad but light still gets in.
But the rooms are not trashy or bad smelling if that's what you mean.

It's a perfectly serviceable hotel. I've stayed in the old tower several times and never had a problem. It's not glamourous but is functional for a good night's sleep.

I've stayed there probably 10 times in the last 5 years- never had a problem with the rooms. It's not glamourous but is functional for a good night's sleep, and not expensive if you get the poker rate $80 to 100 on Fri and Sat nights. Do not worry, you'll be pleased.

like you said its no Borgata. So if you expect Borgata you will be disappointed. Everytime I've stayed there its been about what I expected. I've never been to AC to enjoy the hotel room. Although I will admit the beds at Borgata are money.

"What rate did you get and how? "

No special rate as such, I just checked availability on their website and it offered me a room for 72 bucks including taxes. They seem to have some kind of special offer going at the moment.
