Default Magoo Weekend Report (long, low poker content)

Wow, what a weekend.

Two months ago, I really couldn't decided whether or not to go to the magoo weekend. It's a long story, but I've recently decided to have a much more carpe diem attitude. I don't want to cruise into middle/old age having played it safe or cautiously. I want to arrive going "Wow, what a ride that was." Plus Milo convinced me I should go.

So, this would be my first solo trip to Vegas. I split a room at the Wynn with WDC, who by sheer coincidence is also from the Twin Cities area.

I had always wanted to take a trip, bringing nothing but cash and a toothbrush. I came >this< close to doing excatly that, but ended up packing only super-light instead. Only after I landed on Thursday did I realize I forgot my toothbrush. And that I spilled hot chocolate on myself, not once, but twice on the flight.

This was my first time staying at the Wynn. I'm impressed. The rooms are a strange 70's orange color, but it really grew on me. A simpler elegance than the Belliago. Plus I find the Belliago's hallways to be downright dim.

Dropped my backpack off at the room, threw on a clean shirt, tried to wash the spots off my only pair of jeans, quit when I realized it was going to make me look like I pissed my pants. The room had a great view of the golf course too.

Started off playing the 15/30. A while back there was a long thread discussing the cardroom management theory of the Wynn. I must say, that having a main game, a must-move game, and a must-must-move game was rather annoying. Not to mention I was running bad. No hands of note, but did play with some kid wearing a hat that said EARNER on the front. The back made me laugh: "Rain, sleet, and snow, go out and bring home the doe." Funny, I always spelled it "dough". $-800. Cleaned my jeans & called it a night.

Woke up Friday at 6 am, couldn't sleep any more. Damn time zones. Woke up with a killer headache, must of been the 2 rum and cokes I had with my dinner. Nothing else to do, so I hit up the poker room again. No 15/30 going, no 8/16 going. I get in the 4/8, and it's 5 handed. When I joined, they were chopping blinds 3 out of 4 hands, so I had to put a stop to that. Played until lunch. Started off still running bad, but did make a bit of a comeback near the end. It's good I stopped for a couple of hours to eat and walk a bit to clear my head some. $-51, -$851 total.

Lunch was Red8 at the Wynn. Pretty good Chinese, and not expensive. Reminded me of Noodles at the Belliago. I get back into the 15/30 afterwards. I recognize 70% of the tables from the night before. No obvious fish. The frozen wave continues. I think I won two pots in 4 hours. $-385, $-1236 total. This poker rate was costing me a fortune. My cash on hand hits a critical level, and I was forced to hit up my neteller for an emergancy reload.

WDC arrives, I meet Any2Cards, jakethebake, a few others. The much vaunted "dinner and drinks at 6 meet & greet" turns out to me WDC, Jake & I. We wander around looking for a bar to have a drink in while we wait for the others. We pass buy Lure and the hottie to end all hotties. Jake wants to stop, I say "But it's a night club." Jakes responds: "It's still a bar, right?" We drink. We end up at the buffet. All 3 of us were underwelmed.

Back to the 15/30. I'm in the must-must-move. WDC joins us, I sup bro? him, and meet another trout. This table sucked! The pendulum started to swing the other way, draws hit, pairs held up, yadda yadda $+493, $-743.

Having basically fufilled the poker rate requirement, and being frustrated with the lack of table selection at the Wynn, I strolled on down to the Belliago on Saturday. Night and day difference! Finally, maybe I can make some cash at this table. Doug Lee (of WSOP Circuit event fame) was at my table too. Seemed like an alright guy, but was leaking cash like a sieve. Hand of the day: I've got J [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img]9 [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img], and limp in MP after 2 limpers. CO & button limp, Doug in the SB raises, everyone calls. Flop is Q [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img]J [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img]4 [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img]. Doug bets, folded to me, I raise, folded to Doug. He asks "On a diamond draw?" and 3 bets. I cap it. Turn 9 [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img]. He bets, I raise, he calls. River 9 [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img]. He bets, I raise, he calls. I table my hand and say "Yeah, I was looking for a diamond." He wasn't pleased. Basically, this was the single best session I've ever had. Every draw came in. Every big pair held up. My one set won a boat over boat over nut flush pot. It was unreal how well I was running. $+2480, $+1737 total.

After I cashed out, I was writting down my results and notes by the door to Bobby's Room. Eli Elezra and some other guy were in there playing. So I'm jotting my notes down, and Doyle walks up. I just sort of stare at him for a second, said hello, and grabbed the door for him. He said "Thanks." Dude...Doyle [censored] Brunson just said "Thanks." to me. I need a drink.

It was rapidly approaching Magoo time. I grabbed some dinner and hoofed it down to the MGM. Al & the Crapsfest crew were running late, and there wasn't a drink in sight. The crowd was getting restless. Still, nice to meet up with all of you guys.

I'm the first guy in line at the cage, and buy in for 10 racks. The cashier had to ask me twice if I really wanted all of that in blue chips. As jakethebake reported in another thread, we came to within $2k of buying the MGM out of blue chips.

My table featured a muderer's row of 2+2ers. Milo, Any2, Spook, Joe Tall, Dynasty, WDC, Rocketlaunch, jakethebake. We played it all. 2-7, double flop holdem, tripple flop omaha h/l split with a qualifer, badugi, crazy fox, crazy pinapple. We gave up on pre-flop play and just played everything with a $2 ante instead. I think it was Any2 that said we were basically playing 10/2/4. The games were slow because we'd have to explain them with each new dealer.
Drinks were drunk, rivers were hit, the nuts were checked, and we all had rocking good time. I finished $-80, $+1657. Hell, I think I tipped more than that. Any2cards finished up more than 5 racks. Bastard. I did win a copy of dominic's porn film for having the largest stack. I think that Any2's was taller, but Stickywicket said mine made up for it in girth. NSFW link to porn cover. Dude, that rules.

I don't recall most of the rest of the night. But I know that I didn't get to see the strippers, and I woke up with my roll intact.

Didn't do anything on Sunday other than check out and fly home. I need some sleep.

When's the next one?

Very nice synopsis. You know, I did end up winning $580 at a $2-$4 game with 2+2ers wall-to-wall in 5 hours. Nice win rate.

Of course, most of it occurred in 2 massive pots which I swept.

I couldn't believe the number of people that would watch the game in complete disbelief, whispering that they wished someone left, as they felt they could fleece us for all of our money.

As related in another post, one individual tried, and was sent packing fairly quickly.

The other interesting thing was watching one of the main, attractive floors Jennifer, pull each dealer aside, or a group of dealers aside, and try to explain in advance all of the games we were playing, and the rules to those games.

A HUGE thank you has to go out to the MGM and especially Gary, our key contact and head shift manager. They went out of their way to help us set this up, put up with all of our antics (of course they were all tipped very well as well), and defended us to the security team that wanted to come down and put a stop to our antics.

The high light of this was when multiple people at our table were throwing multiple chips in tips at the dealer at the sametime, all trying to make it into the dealers shirt pocket. Many of us 2+2ers are VERY bad shots, and those tips ended up in the dealers tray.

Then, the dealer is seen taking chips out of the tray and putting them into their pocket. The security team upstairs monitoring all of this was having a major fit. Never the less, Gary told them to hose themselves off with cold water, that they had been informed a month in advance of this, that everyone was being taken care of well, and that the MGM loved the business.

Jennifer told them that they would just make good on the dealer racks if anything didn't add up.

This is what I call customer service. It was a pleasure to play there, and it was enormously fun. Of course, it doesn't hurt to win 29 big bets an hour.

Another highlight any2cards and someone (was it icepick?) split a pretty massive pot after running everyone else out and both turning up 7-2. We need to see the pic of that pot.

I didn't see The Hammer all night. But I did river check the runner runner nut flush on that double-flop-single-turn-single-river-crazy-fox game. Rocketlaunch was supposed to bet damn it!

Don't think that we haven't forgotten.

And I think the MGM owes us all a buffet comp too. Jennifer said she'd take care of us in the future.

I had the other 72. And it was OFFSUIT. I got the fourth bet in preflop, yet somehow Any2 failed to cap?!?!? And here I thought he was a magoo-fest grandmaster.

Magoo GrandMaster .. definitely. Strong poker player ... never.

I just have never learned how to play the hammer correctly. You can rest assured, however, that I have learned by focusing on your style, and will never make the same mistake in the future.

By the way, my prediction that I would never be BEAT by the hammer held true. In fact, there were bets taken on this. I never did collect.

Next time you want me to bet the river, don't call out for a club before it comes. I might be better tricked into betting then.
