Default Satellite Tournament Book

First off, I'm new to this forum and am now addicted!

Second...I was glancing through the poker section of my local bookstore (decent selection, but not great) and noticed "Win Your Way Into Big Money Hold 'Em Tournaments: How to Beat Casino and Online Satellite Poker Tournaments".

While it seems like an interesting read, I've noticed that the McEvoy books get flamed pretty strongly here. The title is obviously "sensational", but I was wondering if the content was any good. (As an aside, I'm still a newbie and don't feel ready for tournaments, but am interested in the whole satellite angle.)

Anyone have any comments on this book? I did a search but came up empty.

Oh, and don't worry...I'm busy studying up and applying the obvious 2+2 books

I think you could find better books than McEvoy's to spend your time on. I got more from the tournament section of Ed Miller's Getting Started in Hold'em than I did from the 4 McEvoy books I own.

A third of the book is literally explaining what a Satellite is... do I have to say more?

I think it may be their best book. I have used several ideas in the SNG's with success and if you are on a limited bankroll satellites may be a good choice for larger tourneys. I have recommended this book to several friends and they also thought it was pretty good. In response to the other post about the ultra basics in the early part of the book, it is true but get past that and there is some usable stuff I have not found elseware.

I'm curious what you thought was usable information that isn't available elsewhere?

I havn't read the book in a while so I may have forgotten something but I really don't remember anything that exicting.

I realize after re-reading my first post that it is ambiguous at best so let me clarify.
I am hoping to go to my first WSOP in 2006 and since I don't have a huge bankroll satellites are my only viable choice. This book has very specific and detailed information specifically on the WSOP satellites- information I have found nowhere else. I think after reading through this material I will feel much more comfortable in playing satellites to gain entry into open events.
Point two: when I first came across several ideas in the one table No limit section they were useful in my sng play. Specifically; understanding how much to bet to accomplish a specific objective. One of the most important ideas for me at the time is the danger of making a small raise that could re-open the betting Let's say you have two limpers up front and you make a small raise with QQ or JJ and one of the early limpers pushes all in...important idea for me at the time Also, the idea that you should have a specific reason any time "you" move all in- for many players they move in because they don't know how much to bet so they go all in with hands like 88 or 99. This idea helped me think about my bets and others' bets in the context of goal or objective. I don't know if these ideas are found elsewhere, but this is where I found them first.

I agree, didnt find this book all that helpful. I think the most helpful information is found in many other books. Allot of "turn a toothpick into a lumberyard" talk, not all that advanced.

I think it is a decent book. As you mention, some of the material applies to SNGs. I think it gets a bad reputation because of McEvoy's name, particularly because of the weak/tight crap he wrote with Cloutier. Daugherty probalby worte most of it.

thanks for the post, I get the feeling that "other" books are not to be discussed in a positive way "for the most part" and new posters seem to get "slammed" quite often for being naieve

Thanks all for the replies. I think I will pass on this book for now! I imagine as I get more advanced it might be worth a look.

Thanks again.
