Protocol for doing business/running it twice

I'm taking a trip to Vegas soon, but given that I don't get to play often I'd rather lower my short-term variance in certain situations.

To that end, what exactly is the protocol for asking a player if he/she wants to run it more than once? If you are betting, do you say then? If you are facing an all-in call decision, would you ask before or after making the call? If in both cases you wait until betting has been concluded, do you simply ask the dealer to wait while you confer with your opponent?

Also, do stakes matter? In terms of NL, I'd only be playing $1/2 unless I start running really well - do casinos frown on this in low-limit games? Any responses will be much appreciated

First, I have never even seen this in a casino, so my comments are as unfounded as can be.

I don't think you'd have much luck finding someone at those games who even knew what running it twice was. If you did, and they agreed, then I can't imagine the dealer not allowing it. If they did, or if they gave you a big hassle about it, I'd just go play elsewhere. Plenty of rooms in Vegas.

From all I've seen, this is mostly used in games where there is A) a major amount of money at stake, and B) some kind of close situation once you're all-in. I don't think a made set is going to be looking to let you run it twice with your top pair and nut flush draw....

But then, I've never actually done it, this is just what I gathered from what I've read...

I haven't ever even once seen this at a 1-2 or 2-5 no limit game here in vegas. The dealers and floors will probably mostly look at you with glazed eyes, having no idea what you are talking about. I wouldn't count on it happening at all, therefore the protocol is really not very important. This is more of a high-stakes type thing.

When we spread the NL at the Stratosphere way back when we did allow business, but we charged $1 from the pot for the players to stop the action to talk. That was a $1-$2 blind game.
