I don't think this poll could possibly accurate. I know I don't just happen never to talk to 94% of Americans. Furthermore, in reality, it is way way easier and often more convenient for an Atheist to say he believes in god than the other way around, even on a poll. And, most Atheists wouldn't take the time to finish that poll..... ie click mmmmmmmmm. whereas religous people have a vested interest in telling other people that they are religous. I know a respected polling group like Gallup is always trying to find the wording of a question that most accurately describes how the people en mass feel (sarcasm) but between vested interests, ignorance of what the poll results mean (notice the question was asked do you believe god "does not exist" whereas, "do you believe in god?" would get different responses, and, in reality the answeres "no" and "maybe" both equal no to the last question since not affirming = not believing) and incorrectly assuming an even distributiton of people responding vs. not responding, they are far far far out on that limb.

And most Americans take Bible stoires (such as Creation) literally

It's very scary, really. I want to have hope in people... but when they are so friggin irrational, it's very hard.

i remember this figure of 94% about 10 years ago, or maybe it was 96%. I'm very dissaapointed that it hasn't changed but 10 years is a short time. but anyway that 1% that say they are sure that god does not exist are ovbiousely morons...and i hope no one in here think that...i mean ur in a poker forum!!! give it odds sohnnnn!!

and i hate the noncommital attitude of americans... if you're going to believe in god (as long as it is a specific god) then go to church and try to live a holy life. I mean, I'm a non-believer, but everyone wants all of the reward and none of the sacrafice..

Guess I am one of the morons.

This topic of certainty has been addressed before. Wonder why people can be certain there is one but not that there isn't? You want odds - how about 1 google to 1 against there being a god.

that's absolutely fine in my mind, i put about as low odds on it also, but simply from a person's respect of logic and reasoning, giving it NO chance is ridiculous... i suppose saying there s NO chance is much easier and get's the general point across, if giving your "official" belief i think most would give it odds (however low they may be) rather than giving a somewaht irrational "NO chance" answer

and someone saying that they are absolutely sure that god does exist is not the same because of logical reasons but probably just as ridiculous.. also this person would be more inclined to have their "official" belief as 100% that theree is a god because if not......well you know... the whole wrath of god thing

61% of those who seldom or never attend church are nevertheless convinced that God exists.

These idiots had better be going to hell.

i don't think that a person can be 100% sure that theree is a god, but there is a reason to claim to be 100% sure that there is a god, but not one to be 100% sure that theree is no god.

I'm not exactly sure how the whole not being able to prove a negative think works, but i think it's applicable in this situation.

and no, a believer cannot be blamed for claiming to be 100% sure that there is a god because that comes with the belief.. i only consider them morons because of such a belief in god, not becuase their 100% sureness claim.

you should probably just commit yourself to hell if you give odds to the christian god's existence.. I'm pretty suree he'd be pissed off
