Default sit-n-gos -- can you make money?

I've been playing sit-n-gos, trying to get more tournament experience, and also practice against smaller fields.
Given that the buy-in for a $20 SNG is $22, and the payout is $100, for a $78 profit --- does anyone primarily play SNGs and make consistent money?
I've been doing pretty well; at the $10 buy-in, I was making the money more than 25% of the time, and mostly coming in first place. Am just trying the $20 buy-ins, but so far, have played 4, and taken first in two of them (didn't hit the money in the other two).

If my win rate is 25%, then I pay $88 to win $100, for a net of $12 (and a time consumption of at least a couple of hours).

Has anyone been able to achieve a higher than 25% win rate playing SNGs?

Try asking in the SnG forum

Aim for 40+% ITM and 25+% ROI.

The variance is HUGE though.

Not sure if you are talking about wins (i.e., first place) or ITM (in the money, first three places). The standard metrics SnG players use are ITM and ROI (return on investment). The numbers I have seen consistently on the 1-Table forum are that a good player at the $11 Party SnGs can maintain a 40% ITM and 40% ROI. The latter would be an average win of just over $4 per SnG.

These numbers drop off sharply as you move up in limits. A good ROI at the $22 SnGs is about 30%, and so on.

As a sporadic poster on the STT forum, I can tell you it would be very difficult to sustain a 25% win rate at the $22s because of variance. The indicator most SNGers use to determine how well they do at a given buy-in is ROI (return on investment). PM me if you would like more info on SNGs.

as I understand it, the max ROI as reported by the best players is about 30% at $11, 25% at $22, and 15% at the $100 and $200 games. Something to strive for, but not realistic for a beginning SNG player.
