Your bet on the flop is fine IMO.it puts pressure on the MP and protects your hand.CO raise means nothing still.I raise here with AK/AQ often against typical oponents.The key to this hand is the check on the turn.Now if he has an overpair as his flop raise suggest no way he`s checking here.He must bet to protect.If his turn check means AK then what do u get by 3-betting the river?He is either on a total bluff -raise(and folds to a 3-bet) or he is trapping with a monster.Ask yourself what kind of hand can he have to :raise the flop,but check the turn and raise you on the nothing river.BTW set of 4s on the river is totally in line with the whole play.
Math: u gain 1 bet some of the time but lose 2 most of the time.
