I say "syr-up"

[/ QUOTE ]

Please clarify.

[/ QUOTE ]

it's clear as day

syr = seer

syr != surrrrr

[/ QUOTE ]

Not you, Patrick.

You, pronounce these:

Byrd
Myrrh

[/ QUOTE ]
Yeah, it's more like this. It's closer to seer than surr, but more schwa than ee.

for example when i say words like car, bar, i pronounce it cahh, bahh.. but i KNOW THIS IS NOT CORRECT. i am not a moron who insists i am right. that is just the accent i have.

[/ QUOTE ]

This is a bad analogy. There are no words in English where A-R makes an "ah" sound. Also, you're pronouncing the same sound wrong for every word it's in. Definitely a different phenomenon.

I don't think the correct pronunciation involves hanging on the vowel sound for too long. If said quickly, the difference is negligable.

EDIT: I hate trying to type phonetics, because I'm not sure how to properly do it. I guess I pronouce it "SI-rup." Quickly.

I have an accent, but it's not bad compared to everyone else you encounter in the south. I made efforts to minimalize it when I got into broadcasting.

seriously these posts are so dumb. generally there is a right and wrong way to pronounce certain words. the worst is the people that grew up mispronouncing them and somehow think they are correct because of that. it's really easy to realize you are wrong.

[/ QUOTE ]

On most of the words I've seen posted, the dictionary lists both pronunciations as correct. By what standard are you determining that only one is right?

Syrup

Aunt

if a word has two acceptable pronunciations, so be it. even though the words that do have two acceptable pronunciations probably are meant to be said ONE way only, but idiots messed it up so they started to recognize both pronunciations.

sort of like immaterial
