I think the point is that the movie is about war itself, not about life during wartime.

This is a good resurrection, but, man, I've apparantly got a lot of movies to watch if I'm going to be able to vote in many matchups.

It's occurred to me that the best war movie never made would be set in 1968, and include the first hour of "Full Metal Jacket" (to show how naive boys get "hardened", but never quite fully prepared), the first twenty minutes of "Saving Private Ryan" to show how hellish war is, and the last 45 minutes of "Platoon", to show how senseless it all is in the end. More of an "anti"-war movie, anyways.

This is pretty good. Add Scott's speech from Patton at the very beginning and throw in the last ten minutes of the Deer Hunter at the very end.

That only shows the top rated 50 and worst rated ten. I was pointing out that just searching on 'war' yields several hundred results, so this poll as proposed may not be viable.

Edit - oooh Henry V is on that list, good one!

Let's cast this thing. R. Lee Ermey and Lou Gossett Jr. would play the D.I.'s. John Wayne would play the General character who gives the Patton-esque speech. Lee Marvin would play the gruff, no-nonsense sergeant. Sean Penn would play the stoner vet ending his tour of duty. Steve McQueen would play the smart-assed con artist, always looking to make a cheap buck off of the war. And Audie Murphy would play the fresh faced kid from Kentucky who enlists with good intentions, but then recognizes the horrors of war.
