Default Terrible 9 high Lay Down

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think I made a terrible lay down with 9 high tonight. PP 10-20. EP loose raise, two callers, I call with 89spades on the button, sb and bb call. Flop 577 two clubs. Bet by the raiser, folded to me, I call, sb check-raises. Called around. Turn comes a Jack. sb bets, call, I call. River comes Jack of Clubs. sb bets, folded to me.

I'm thinking the sb could easily have check raised with a pair of 5's. Maybe he had a 7. Maybe he had Clubs. But if he had Fives he most certainly could have followed up his check raise with a bet on turn. Now when the Jack pairs on the River his Fives are no good. If he has no kicker his only chance to win the pot is to bet again. If this is the case my 9 high is 50-50 to be the best high card. But I saw those 7's those Jacks and those 3 clubs and thought, this is ridiculous calling with 9 high. I'm going to look like a total idiot. I layed it down. But with all that money in the pot I think it was a terrible lay down. Am I wrong?

May I ask why you would call that flop with 9s8s?

Because it's the pfr who bet and likely has missed overcards, so a 6 8 or 9 would all be good.

Hi steveyz,

Wouldn't raising be the correct play, with both blinds to act behind?

If he's gonna continue with the hand, then raising seems like the better option.
