If you raise preflop you should raise after the flop "most" of the time. Especially if the only overcard that flops is paired. You're not going to get very many flops where you can feel safe with an overpair.

If you get called on the flop, then you slow down. Then a check on the turn could be merited.

Your check on the river was fine because you opponent is not going to call unless he has you beat.
