Default Nitty little Plaxico Burress observation

Maybe I'm deaf or something, but it seems every NFL commentator, from the play-by-play guys on Sunday to Berman/Jackson and the mid-week NFL Live guys, pronounce Burress's name "Plexico." Why do they do this, instead of saying "Plaxico"? Is the name Plaxico pronounced Plexico? Or is there something else I'm missing?

Nothing is worse than calling the Jaguars the JagWIRES.

It's because a lot of TV commentators don't know their ass from a hole in the ground. I remember when Hakeem Olajuwon finally informed everyone that his name had a SILENT "H" at the beginning of it. Did the commentators listen? Nope, they started pronouncing it HHHAKEEM...instead of Akeem, the way you're supposed to pronounce it.

Idiots. And yes, I've noticed the same thing about Plaxico Burress. I suppose it's possible his name is pronounced "Plexico," but I have no reason to think that. I think it's just that a few trend-setting announcers suck and the rest follow their suckiness.

If Plaxico will behave himself, Eli is going to make him one of the highest rated receivers in the league.

This is fantastic. I can't believe the question was solved, and so swiftly and doubtlessly. I stand corrected, and can now safely and confidently say "Plex-ico" like Tom Jackson.

(But I'll never say "FROM!lousiville")

this is hilarious:

[ QUOTE ]
So, to set the record straight once and for all, No. 1 pick Plaxico Burress was asked how his name -- first and last -- is pronounced.

"It's Plex-ico BURR-iss," said the rookie wide receiver from Michigan State. "Maybe some people misunderstood me."

Part of the confusion arose because the voice-mail message on Burress' cell phone pronounces his last name as Burr-ESS.

My favorite was when a ref, obviously from somewhere in the south, announced a personal foul for a "hit to the hay-ed."
