He isn't doing this via dumb luck (Varkonyi) and several miracle two-outters (Moneymaker).

Could you recount the several two-outers that Moneymaker hit?

[/ QUOTE ]

One that I can recall was getting all in on the flop vs. Brenes 88 vs. AA. The flop was Q high I think, Brenes bet and Money went all in. He turned an 8.

Another was the river boat Q's over A's vs. Phil's made boat, though that was a 4 outer. This one was hardly Money's fault in terms of bad play. I think I'd call in all in with trip Queens and the best kicker on the turn.

I think those were the only two bad beats ESPN caught.

Raymer never had his aces busted in the telecasts for which we saw him.

[/ QUOTE ]

No, I remember a ESPN episode where Raymer's pushes with AA and gets cracked by some guy's TT on the river, and Raymer says (paraphrased) "That's the first bad beat I've taken so far"

As far as skill goes, Money is at least decent to win the big one in my opinion. Raymer I think is one of the top 5 poker players in the world right now. His results speak to that.

[/ QUOTE ]

Raymer may be top 5 at playing large tournaments filled with dead money.

He's hardly a top 5 cash game player.

You say he's a decent poker player, but nothing great.

He's ripping through huge tournament fields!!

A player might come along and be able to it once (Varkonyi, Moneymaker).. but to come through Four huge WSOP fields over 2000+ people and into the money each time, (and 2 final tables, looking for #3)..

Raymer is solidifying himself as one of the greatest NL Holdem tournament players ever and into the realm of Ivey, Lederer, Brunson, Hellmuth, Chan, Cloutier!

He isn't doing this via dumb luck (Varkonyi) and several miracle two-outters (Moneymaker).

Raymer is a GREAT Tournament Poker Player!!

[/ QUOTE ]

It's easier to make the money in a giant field than it is in a small field.

keep in mind that raymer was the chip leader for several days last year and remained that way (obviously) until the thing was over.
his ability to play the big stack should not be questioned. the guy knows what he's doing.
all that said, he's got quite a ways to go in this year's event, although that chip stack is a good start.

At the final table last year the other players repeatedly got all their chips in as favorites against Greg preflop and Greg sucked out. His stack going into the final table was impressive, but his final table play was nothing special.

[/ QUOTE ]

If you mean standard big stack play, I agree. But that's Greg's forte, he might be the best big stack player in the tournament. He understands when to call/reraise all-in as well or better than anyone. Yes he is frequently the underdog, but if he keeps putting money in as a slight dog he is going to out last the smaller stacks.

It was 7 outs, but yeah, that wasn't exactly a bad beat.
