Re: 2005 MLB win shares
Another thing of note is that each team is allocated a certain amount of win shares (3 * number of wins). Since the Cards won about 9 more games than their statistics indicate, you should expect a little inflation in their win shares.

Re: 2005 MLB win shares
James claims, I believe, that a player's win shares does not depend on whether he plays for a good team or not. I always doubted that this was the case. Compare Jeter and Peralta's offensive win shares to Eckstein's. Something seems amiss.

Re: 2005 MLB win shares
Indeed. Eckstein had an OBP of .758 and was on base 256 times. Jeter has an OBP of .839 and was on base 290 times. Batting leadoff for the Cardinals, Eckstein scored only 90 runs. Jeter scored 122. Jhonny Peralta had an OBP of .886. Granted he had fewer plate appeances. And maybe there is some discrepancy due to the difference in the leagues. But I've got to question a system that gives Eckstein's offensive year greater value than Jeter's or Peralta's.
Maybe Clarkmeister helped James and gave Eckstein extra win shares for [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] |

Re: 2005 MLB win shares
I think the Clutch rating is a big part of this discrepancy. Eckstein has a Clutch rating of 12.3 mostly due to a BA/RISP of .373. Jeter's Clutch rating is -10.3, Peralta's is -1.9.
