Default How much should I have bet

I was new to this table, and i'm still fairly new to real money NL, (I know this is PL, that was one of my many mistakes)I didnt have any reads on my opponent.

Now i'm sure I made a few mistakes on this hand(mainly the check on the flop..wtf), but one thing I was curious about was the river. What should I have bet here?

Party Poker Pot-Limit Hold'em, $ BB (10 handed) converter

UTG+2 ($45.74)
MP1 ($6)
MP2 ($27.79)
MP3 ($13.48)
CO ($29)
Hero ($24.4)
SB ($23.64)
BB ($4.41)
UTG ($9.8)
UTG+1 ($27.66)

Preflop: Hero is Button with J[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img], J[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img]. MP1 posts a blind of $0.25. SB posts a blind of $0.1.
2 folds, UTG+2 calls $0.25, MP1 (poster) checks, 3 folds, Hero raises to $0.75, 2 folds, UTG+2 calls $0.50, MP1 folds.

Flop: ($2.10) 7[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img], 4[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img], J[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] (2 players)
UTG+2 checks, Hero checks.

Turn: ($2.10) T[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] (2 players)
UTG+2 checks, Hero bets $1, UTG+2 raises to $4, Hero calls $3.

River: ($10.10) 4[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] (2 players)
UTG+2 bets $5, Hero calls $19.65 (All-In), UTG+2 folds.

Final Pot: $34.75

If you got to the river the way you did, I would have raised it to about $12. You bet double the pot on the river... too much too late.

But your problem goes back to the flop (as you noted.) Don't you normally make a continuation bet on the flop if you raised preflop? If you raise preflop and he checks to you, you should be betting no matter what. And they should expect that from you. (I should mention, with 2 clubs on the board, you should bet because what if you gave him a free card and a club fell?)

You then would bet again on the turn like you did (but now you could have bet a little more... and hopefully, he checkraises you more)

Assuming you still got this far, your river bet would no longer be an overbet and he might feel a little more pot comitted.

this is not good.

if the other person has any piece of this board, a draw, or maybe even a small-mid PP he will likely call some bets. people at this level like to call. you gave away free/cheap cards with a strong but vulnerable hand. your deception is going to far and will get you into trouble.

I definetly agree with the above posters. Pot the flop.

I typically do follow through on the flop, I honestly can't say why I checked here, especially with two clubs on the board.

Good point about the turn bet, when I look at the hand now I really see all my mistakes.
