Here it is:

[ QUOTE ]

What approximate win rate (after a significant # of hands of course) do you think should one should have at NL25 before making the move to NL50?

[/ QUOTE ]

FIMBULWINTER'S RESPONSE:

first off you should never view it as a quantum leap kinda thing. just take little shots when you feel comfortable, have the money and are good enough. here's a hand waving yardstick:

try 50NL when:

- you're confident in your preflop game
- you understand position
- you have a good idea of their hand by the river
- you have an ok feel when to continuation bet
- you have 500 or more

100NL when:

- you're confident playing draws
- you can spot good semibluff opportunities
- you can lay down AA/KK unimproved
- you're attacking the blinds in easy steal situations
- you have 1200+

200NL when:

- you're ok betting your stack on a draw
- a PFR from you doesnt always mean AA-JJ and AQs+
- you're starting to play one hand while holding another
- you have more than one mode
- you have 3000 or more

400NL when:

- you can ID profitable preflop steals
- you know how to pick between b3b and c/r
- position factors heavily into your play
- you're good at manipulating pot size
- you have 6000+

1K NL when

- your lines don't define your hand
- you're good at playing and winning lots of small pots
- your oop opponent must hold a strong hand to win a pot from you
- you understand the real math of the game at least at a basal level 4_2_it will never be able to play at this level
- you have 20000+

Don't feel bad: I have no idea what a "basal level" is and I've played 5/10 just fine.

I have almost exactly the same problem. I beat the 25NL tables easily. But the 50NL tables are significantly tighter .
I was really glad to read this post - I thought I was the only one with this problem.

[/ QUOTE ]

If anyone can explain how I seem to be the only person who does better at 50NL rather than 25NL - without using the handy phrases "small sample size" or "variance is a [insert preferred expletive]" I'm all ears..

to pick up on another point...

"winning style of play at 25NL is a losing style at higher limits"

is this correct?

and if so - what are the main adjustments you need to make to your game to be a success at either level?

aoplogies if I am being really stupid and not seeing the blatantly obvious here..

This is not correct. I think if you play EXACTLY the same way you play at NL25 to beat it for, say, 10PTBB/100, you would beat NL1K for at least ~3PTBB/100. TAG style is CERTAINLY not losing play at 5/10. Did you guys not see my post where he called a bet/3-bet all-in with bottom pair no draw on a mono flop vs a preflop raiser? And that was a WINNING 5/10 PLAYER!

You mentioned that you play on PokerRoom. I've played a decent amount on there and I've found their $50 NL to be among the hardest on the net. I actually found the $100NL to be easier, but I only played a couple thousand hands of it. My advice to you would be to take a shot at $100NL but only play one table and make sure you can can concentrate fully on it. Take plenty of player notes and try to get a feel for how everyone plays and practice your hand-reading skills. Try to err on the side of playing weak-tight until you start to get a feel for the differences at this level; this should help you from losing a lot of money.
