If you don't know what type he is, definitely best not to.

Yeah. You don't want him going postal on you. As a sidenote, my mom's friend did this to his brother when they were in HS. He told his brother that today was clown day, hyped it up, and said his outfit was at school or something. Apparently the brother got really into it, makeup, fake hair, shoes, etc. The whole works.

The brother didn't talk to him for 10 years.

Monday is of course Halloween.
I have a new employee coming into work that day.
It was suggested to me I tell him to Dress up that day for the morning halloween party (which of course doesnt exist)
and bring a change of clothes as we were going to take him out for lunch.

I find it hysterical and want to do it, but others think its cruel.

Should I do this? Or will this lead to bad Karma?

Thoughts? Let's Discuss...

If things go sour you could quickly turn it into a "Welcome to the company" party in which you introduce him to everyone. This is all personality dependant as other posters have said. If you werent the one that interviewed him, ask the interviewer what they thought of him.

Aren't the chances pretty low that he'd dress up even if you told him to? Put yourself in his position. And if you tell him to bring regular clothes, 98% he either doesn't dress up or comes in regular clothes and brings his costume.

In theory I like the idea, but in practice I don't think it will work. At least not as outlined in your post.

I think its like 70% to 30& it wont work. But I'd feel too bad if I told him not to bring change of clothes....

First days are usually stressful enough. Getting a few chuckles just doesn't seem worth ruining the day of someone you don't even know. That said, it DOES seem like a good time to start up a new hazing ritual... (What ritual I don't know.)

Don't do it.

If you knew the person has a good sense of humor, I'd say it's cool, but you don't know, so don't do it.
