Default 99 in the BB: Fishing w/o a Line

Pacific Poker 2/4, 10 players

I've been at the table for approx. 35 hands.
MP2 appears to be aggressive and fairly selective, though looser than a 2+2er. Button is a call station.

Preflop: 4 folds, MP2 raises, 2 folds, Button calls, SB folds, Hero calls in the BB with 99.

Flop: J 5 2 rainbow

Hero likes his hand but not his position. Line?

Bet out and hope to get raised.

You are in a tough spot because you are at the mercy of MP2. You really want him to raise overcards to clear the field, as many will, but he may not do this. A check-raise will be a bad course here because you will likely trap the two later position players in if MP2 leads and get them tied to the pot. The only hope for really protecting your hand is to manipulate MP2. At least he's aggressive, so this may happen, and at least you don't risk letting the flop check through.

If it gets raised and re-raised back to you, with so few draws, you can safely dump the hand. If it's not raised you should plan on leading the turn back. The most difficult situation to play, frustratingly, is the one you hope for: MP2 raises and others fold. In that case, I like calling the flop raise and donk-betting a non-A (maybe non-K) turn. If you get raised again on the turn it's probably time to be done with the hand.

I bet, MP2 raises, Button calls 2 cold...

Do you continue or dump?

Call I think. See what happens on the turn. It'd be interesting if you checked, MP2 bet and then Button folded. Then you might decide to see a showdown, if you know MP2 could take that line with overcards. You might even raise the turn in that situation...

What do you guys think about three betting preflop. We have extra dead money against button, and I think we have a decent edge here.

This is actually a decent position for your hand.

Check, mp2`s raise will most likely be followed by an autobet, if button likes the flopp he will most likely raise, or if he wants to "get lucky" on turn, he will call adding to the pot, then when action gets back to you u raise. Then u are protecting your hand and defining strenght more accurately IMOP.
