Re: Liquor Store (LCBO) on strike...
[ QUOTE ]
What is the LCBO exactly? Are you saying the actual liquor stores there are govt owned? [/ QUOTE ] In Ontario, the government seems to think if liquor were available privately, we'd all be raging alcoholics. So, you can only buy hard liquor at government owned liquor stores - the LCBO. They also handle things like licensing for bars & private functions, etc. You can buy beer at the Beer Store (yes, that's what it's called) which is owned by Labatt's and Molson, and wine at privately owned wine stores. But that's all. Even restaurants and bars have to buy from the LCBO. It sucks. I want to buy beer when I get my groceries, dammit!!! |

[ QUOTE ] The Liquor control board of ontario goes on strike at midnight tonight. [/ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] Time for the government to put the LCBO up for sale. [/ QUOTE ] What is the LCBO exactly? Are you saying the actual liquor stores there are govt owned? [/ QUOTE ] Yeah, LCBO is the Liquor Control Board of Ontario and it is a government owned corporation. There's been rumours of privitization for awhile. We can also only buy beer at "The Beer Store" Its pretty lame. Quebecers and a few other provinces can buy beer in corner stores, gas stations etc, like you guys. |

Re: Liquor Store (LCBO) on strike...
It's wierd in the US. I can walk into any drugstore, walmart, grocery store in Montana and buy vodka, wine, beer, whatever. But in Minnesota, you can only get liquor and wine in liquor stores. In fact the groceries and convenience stores that sell beer only offer swill called 3.2 beer. Basically watered down piss that has at most 3.2% alcohol. Virtually nobody drinks that crap. So the liquor store is about it, and of course they aren't open on Sundays and have very limited hours all other days of the week. They close by 8pm M-T, and 10pm on Fri and Sat.

Re: Liquor Store (LCBO) on strike...
[ QUOTE ]
Those bastards. I'm getting married in 3 weeks, and we have to provide the booze. As if it's not bad enough they charge us an extra 11% tax because it's for a wedding, I have to find something to do with $500 worth of liqour for 3 weeks. And figure out how I'm going to pay rent. Not only that - I'm out of scotch, and the wife didn't buy me more when she was there. [/ QUOTE ] Hey, First, I have never heard of an extra charge for a wedding (11% is lots). How would they even find out what it was for? Second, if this is correct, you should return all that booze to LCBO (they will accept it all back and give you a refund) and buy it again WITHOUT telling them what it is for (save that 11%). |

Second, if this is correct, you should return all that booze to LCBO (they will accept it all back and give you a refund) and buy it again WITHOUT telling them what it is for (save that 11%). [/ QUOTE ] Since we're reselling it, we need a liquor license. I'm too cheap to have an open bar, and my friends drink too damn much anyhow. Part of the rules of a liquor license for resale is you need to pay the 11% tax. We also need to show the receipt to the hall when we bring in the liquor, because they could lose their license if they didn't enforce that part. So, the tax isn't really because it's for a wedding, it's because we're reselling. On a positive note - there's not going to be a strike. The government caved, as expected. |
