Writing my College Essay on Poker?
So in the last few days I have decided its about time to start writing my college essay. i have really been strugling thinking of a topic to write about and everything i come up with is super cheesy. So i figure i might as well write it on what im passionate about right now... poker. Im going to start writing right after i post this so anyone can help me think of an angle that would be good to go about this. Im hoping to give the people reading my essay a break from the monotony of everyone else who writes a generic essay. I play online and a little in casinos (when i dont get carded) and have a decent bankroll. I dont really think they would care if im underage but if they do that means they are intrested enough in my essay to go through the paperwork and see if I'm 18. So if you give me some ideas about how to go about this and help me brainstorm a little it would be much appreciated.
-Brett I post my final draft in a few days when im done |

Re: Writing my College Essay on Poker?
This decision is very opponent specific:
If you are applying to a school above your grade/SAT level, you need to impress them, and definitly should write about something you are passionate about (poker). If you are applying to a school that you are qualified for, but barely, I would try to avoid the topic of gambling, and try to find something else in your life that matters to you. If you are overqualified, mise well run the poker essay. |

Re: Writing my College Essay on Poker?
anything you write about, put emphasis on grammar and just general word structure, and make sure it comes from the heart. i wrote about a car accident for college cause its what i remembered and had a vivid theme for...anything you do, just do it right. shouldnt matter if its poker or not, unless you emphasize how youre in debt to a hundred people and are a fugitive... This is a bad idea. Seriously, don't do it. There are too many admissions people who won't understand that poker isn't just pure gambling and gambling is a vice. To them it's as if you wrote your essay about playing roulette or drinking whiskey or shoplifting. Your college essay isn't the place for this.

There have been lots of posts about this before, and I believe the general consensus has been that it's a bad idea. Go with something less controversial.
