Default Calculating ROI

I've been trying to figure out the exact formula for ROI. Is it just 1-(amount invested/amount returned)? Or is it (amount returned/amount invested)-1?

SX:

ROI = Profit/Investment

Multiply by 100 to get a 'nice' percentage.

(Earned-Invested)/Invested

Does that sound right?

I tried Earned/Invested but the number was way too high to be ROI.
