Re: Anyone get a real gross feeling while they\'re in a casino?
[ QUOTE ]
While most people in a casino are not gambling addicts, there is something troubling about so many people spending their retirement pumping quarters in the slots. (At least poker, even badly played, is a bit more intellectual though not much at its nadir.) Being troubled by it doesn't make me holier-than-thou. [/ QUOTE ] If they can't afford to lose it, then yes, it's troubling. But how do you know? And why are you not troubled by the fact that most of the people you are playing poker with are also throwing away money that they might not be able to afford? Who is losing more money -- the perpetual loser playing 10/20 Hold 'em or the old lady putting quarters in a 97% payback machine? I just think you draw too large of a distinction between what goes on in the poker room and what goes on in the rest of the casino. I see so many people around here falling back on the old "Poker is +EV!" line of reasoning. It's not my place to question whether or not anybody on this board is a winning or losing player, as I simply do not have enough information to draw such a conclusion. But the fact is that while poker can be "+EV" when played at a highly skilled level, the vast majority of players lose more money at the game than they win. |

Re: Anyone get a real gross feeling while they\'re in a casino?
The smoke does it for me. I hate smelling like stale cigarettes, and a good percentage of gamblers are chain smokers. When I walk out of the casino and I can smell the smoke in my clothes, in my hair, and in my pores, I feel really gross and dirty.
Of course, the putrid smell of stale cigarettes is easier to take when I've posted a big win. Then it's the smell of...victory. We don't have a card room at my local casino, but they've recently made 1/2 of the casino non-smoking, which almost makes me want to go there to play some -EV games. Almost. |

But when I'm in the main casino area or in Vegas, where the alcohol and cig smoke flows freely....yes, I usually shower when I get back to my room or my house. I can only take so much. ScottieK |

Re: Anyone get a real gross feeling while they\'re in a casino?
At least the old ladies playing slots know they stand no chance. The poker room is full of ugly degenerates who actually think they deserve to win and flick cards and throw their hands at the muck and treat the dealer like trash and are generally ugly and annoying to be around.
Give me the slot players anyday. |

Your time at the tables in Commerce has given you brown (*hit) colored glasses with which to view your world, Shant. However, please keep in mind that we NEED those "ugly degenerates" as our future bankrolls.

I only have sh*t colored glasses when I think about that place. |

Re: Anyone get a real gross feeling while they\'re in a casino?
[ QUOTE ]
Anyone else ever just feel like a nasty nasty degenerate while in a casino? I'm currently staying at Turning Stone, and it's kinda sick watching people play slots, roulette, and other ridiculous games. Can't help but wonder if they're betting their life savings. I have no sympathy, but does anyone else feel weird being around all the different people? I'll see people mindlessly scratching themselves while pulling slots for hours.... Maybe it's just cause I find it so stupid. Once I'm in the pokerroom I feel fine and at home, but the table games/slots seem to really bother me...meh. Probably a good thing so I won't dare gambool it up too much. [/ QUOTE ] I used to once think like you do. But I've "evolved." I suggest you take up playing craps as therapy for your condition. Hell, I used to always want to be PLUS EV too, but as a condition of my being initiated from the "2+2 club" BACK into the human race, I have decided to occasionally do things that I know are NEGATIVE EV. This allows me to keep in touch with my humanity, and the fact that not everything in life is purely and solely based on whether it's +EV or not. You'll have more fun, I assure you, and possibly live longer, if you follow my lead here. All the participants of last november's craps fest will agree. al |

Re: Anyone get a real gross feeling while they\'re in a casino?
I don't have any moral issues but after handling some chips and cards and looking around the table at the other people that are handling them too you can bet I wash my hands before I go to the bathroom as well as after.
