Default Flopped a boat, didn\'t bet....folded on the turn.

i think i may get a record for losing the smallest pot after flopping a monster.

Party Poker Pot-Limit Hold'em, $ BB (9 handed) converter

MP2 ($180.65)
MP3 ($641.05)
CO ($192.3)
Button ($133.1)
SB ($142)
BB ($200)
Hero ($209.5)
UTG+1 ($107.15)
MP1 ($157.82)

Preflop: Hero is UTG with 8[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img], 8[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img]. SB posts a blind of $1.
Hero calls $2, 4 folds, CO calls $2, Button calls $2, SB (poster) completes, BB checks.

Flop: ($10) K[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img], K[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img], 8[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] (5 players)
SB checks, BB checks, Hero checks, CO checks, Button checks.

Turn: ($10) K[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] (5 players)
SB checks, BB bets $5, Hero folds, CO folds, Button folds, SB folds.

Final Pot: $15

Looks like you've got yourself a pair of 8s... which is probably still good. Raise the turn.

I have two questions: why didn't you bet the flop? why did you fold the turn?

Those are the only two things I didn't understand about your post.

obviously i should have bet the flop.

as for raising the turn, you are the 2nd one to suggest this, but i don't understand why. could i be ahead? sure. could i chop it with the bettor? sure. could i lose a lot more than $2? sure. i chose to lose $2 on the hand rather than find out the hard way that villain has the case king, or call a 1/2 pot size bet to chop a small pot.

cheers!

Your not going to be chopping this pot and i don't see why you think you are.

Bet the flop, raise the turn.

OK, I agree it is obvious that you should have bet the flop. I hope you do next time. As for the turn, how often do you think you're chopping, how often do you think you're losing and how often do you think you're winning? If you're winning, how many outs does the opponent probably have? If you're losing, how many outs do you probably have? If you're chopping, how many outs do you and your opponent have to scoop?

Why is it obvious to bet the flop here? The only person calling here is the one who has the king. You want people to chase the flushes and with other high cards. If someone does have Kx here they have 4 outs to a better boat, a risk that I would be willing to take. More often than not the king will fire out on the turn, where the perfect trap lies if the card is in your favor.

As for raising the turn... why? The original poster is right, not much happening here other than him losing money. I vote for check/calling down as long as the bet is not huge. The bet on the turn could mean simply ace high, trying to take it down, but getting into a battle here with just a pair of eights wouldn't be +EV in my book.

Trying to build a big pot with someone who has a King is a good reason to bet this flop.

Also, people will draw dead to flushes here.
