Default Stupid question

What's an "Overlay" when describing a tournament?

I was on Bonus Whores site and was looking at the tournament list and couldn't figure it out....

Default Re: Stupid question

Basically, an overlay occurs when a site guarantees a certain sized prize pool for a tournament but there are not enough entrants to meet it, forcing the site to pony up some money to meet their guarantee.

For instance, say a site has a $50k guaranteed prize pool tournament with a $50+$5 buy-in. If only 900 people register, the prize pool would only be $45000. Thus, the site would have to add $5000 to the prize pool to meet its guarantee. This $5000 is the overlay; effectively, you're paying $55 to play in a tournament where the buy-in "should be" $60.56.
