includes land based air power

Absolutely correct. In sheer numbers perhaps not but many of the numbers in foreign countries , esp. China and NK are inflated by large amounts of obsolete aircraft.

We have the best technology, the best planes, the best pilots. We have Air supremacy, which enables the most absurd close air support out of anyone.

Taken from the book How to make War in the 21st Century

Put these countries in order in terms of military land power: (includes land based air power)

U.K.
Turkey
South Korea
China
Israel
U.S.
Russia
India
Pakistan
North Korea

[/ QUOTE ]

Without a more specific criteria, it's hard to quantify "combat power". Some of those countries have huge standing armies, with poor equipment and poor mobility, others have smaller but much more efficient forces.

Anyway, going by the definition of "combat power" by http://www.strategypage.com/fyeo/how...abases/armies/

(numbers are a metric explained at the above website)

US 2488
China 827
Israel 617
India 564
Russia 369
S. Korea 289
N. Korea 274
UK 259
Turkey 240
Pakistan 235

Link is dead. I'm waiting to see it before I weigh in on a seemingly ridiculous ranking.

As far as I understand it, you just need to think in terms of four categories:

1) US - The global military hegemon.

2) China - Military monster, albeit still way behind #1, that is hemmed in by the US strategically.

3) S. Korea, N. Korea, Taiwan, India, Russia, Turkey, Israel, Pakistan, and several more - countries that have been investing in armed forces in order to achieve or defend dominant positions in local theaters. They have zero chance against numbers 1 and 2, are much stronger than 4, and often are trying to balance against each other.

4) Everybody else - Trusting that nobody will attack them and that, if they get attacked, great powers are coming to the rescue.

One thing important to remember is that we control the worlds oceans so there is a zero percent chance we could ever be invaded.

Default Category 5

The fear of attack inthe US cannot be based on military power-- at least not by a capable foe. A capable foe which is either defending itself or attacking preemptively will use tactics that may render the military power null and void.

We have found that foe, we dont understand the tactics they are using.
