Default Jack Morris

HOF, yea or nay?

heard this question listening to sports talk radio. The primary argument in favor was that Morris was an awesome big game pitcher and pitched in possibly the most exciting game 7 ever of a world series.

I say Yes, dude was a total gamer, and was from the last era of "real" pitchers in the league. That big game [censored] is just that, [censored], but I think he should be in.

For some reason, I remember him having the most wins in the 1980s. Is this correct?

Jack Morris had the most wins of anyone from 1977-1994. It's possible he had the most wins of the 80s, as there really weren't any significant pitching talents in the 80s... the best pitcher of the 80s was, who? Dave Stieb?

I agree. His ERA+ is 108.

Wins mean nothing. If you have a great bullpen and you are an average pitcher on a team with a good offense, you can win 20 games.

as someone who was at game 7 of the WS in 91 at the dome (although i was 9...) it was amazing- what a thug going ten innings of shutout ball.

and blylevin NEEDS to be in the hall. it's a joke that he's not. this is one place where if you disagree you're just flat out wrong.

Yeah, Jack Morris did pitch in one of the greastest "clutch" performances of all time... he's still not hall worthy. His ERA in the postseason is 3.80... probably about as close as you could get to his career ERA of 3.90.

I would definitely vote in Blyleven, Tommy John, Kaat and Morris. I don't buy the 300 win threshold as a measure of who gets in or stays out. Phil Niekro went 21-20 one season; wins are very dependent on run support and bullpen consistency. Morris was a deadly pitcher for most of the 80s and early 90s, and his 10 inning gem in the 91 WS is the greatest pitching performance I've ever seen. I think these borderline pitchers will make it in once the era of 300 win starters comes to an end (it may already have - who's gonna get to 300 now that Maddux made it?).
