Default My little challenge for ski season...

Recently, well about a month ago, I took the last $4 I had in my Paradise account to play in one of those 600 person $2 + $2 reload tourneys. I got 8th and that got me $150. So i took that money over to Party Poker because I heard it was softer. My new friends, in my newish town, have been asking about whether or not I'm gonna get a ski pass. Well I am going to get one anyway, but I thought it would be a nice challenge to see if I could make enough playing poker to pay for it. Why stop there? Why not make enough to buy a decent pair of skis (either from a ski swap or ebay). My skis are pretty old and don't perform well in the deep powder that we often have. And since my playing is going to piss off my new wife a little bit we can't forget her! So let's buy her a snowboard, (she says she wants to learn), or maybe some other nice gift if she decides against the snowboarding. She said she didn't need a season pass since she didn't think she'd go that much. So here's the rundown:

Current Bankroll: $390.00
Season Pass: $279.00
Skiis for me: $200.00
Snowboard for her: $200.00
Total Needed plus left over BR: $800
Days Left: (as of 10/19) 17 Days.

The town ski swap is on Nov. 6, that is also the last day to get passes for 279, after that they are 479. So basically I want to have enough in my account to buy all the above gear, plus at least a little left over to still play with. I will probably play $10/1 SnG's and $25NL's. I'm getting better at the NL's, although the beats are tough, and I've been beat on the river many times the last several days. But for the most part I usually head into any all-ins with the best hand, so that should work itself out. As for the SnG's... I've been mixing it up evenly b/w 10/1 and 20/2, I'm up about $15 on the $20 but up about $150 on the $10's. Overall I'm ITM 44% of the time, so I can imagine my $10 ITM is around 10% higher than the overall number. Since I'm a working stiff, I only have a couple hours to play during the weekdays and maybe 10 hours total on the weekend.

Poker is fun and I really enjoy playing, especially live, but hey Alaska doesn't have alot of casinos. But skiing is really fun, but can be expensive. I couldn't think of anything better than getting back into skiing for next to free (a $50 buy-in at Paradise around 9/07). I look forward to hearing your comments on the ethics of this challenge. Some may say you should never touch your bankroll, even if you're starving. Others probably view it as a good thing to take some out from time to time to enjoy life. I'll try to post every day or at least every couple of days. I commend other guys on doing 60 day challenges for $60k, etc., but for my first challenge I'm going to keep it small. Wish me luck, especially if I'm playing against you.

Not too tall an order if you can play sng's well enuf and can put in some hours. I'd suggest don't multitable too much and play 25 or 25 sng's. Mebbe 2 tables, w/ staggered starts.

As long as you do this should be no problem at teh 10/15 sng's. Sounds like you're a winning player probably.

How can there be an ethics problem with this - unless you think any kind of gambling is immoral. If you mean should you spend your BR ever, heh, well, if you shouldn't, then why would you ever play poker in the first place..!? It's to get more money that you can spend of course...silly...!

I say good plan. gl

So many bad beats and a little bit of tilting resulted in another bad night. Did work hard for a second place finish in an SnG where I lost at least 3 big pots where I was a favorite by well over 50%. Lost an all-in NL hand when my nut flush was beaten by a runner-runner str8 flush! That is bad. There were more, but I really have to get PokerTracker so I can make sure I'm betting into these hands with the odds. It really does seem like I am, I don't go in big with 2 pair if one isn't high pair, of course it depends on the oppenent and betting that is going on. I'm not overplaying Ax or low pockets. I haven't flopped trips with pocket anything in about a week it seems like. I'd rather have pocket 6's and hit a set with an Ace on the board than actually hit the set with AA. Seems like lately if I get a monster hand like that everyone just lays down, even when I make my bet look like a limp. So what's the score, Eleanor?

BR: $144
Days to go: 14
Amount Needed: $656

I do have a plan though, I'm signing up with another site and will get a %20 bonus, so that's a $100 when I clear it. At the rate this is going I will be broke before then, but that is not going to happen. This run of rotten cards will end, like a bad storm. These things don't last forever right?

No, I'm from Minnesota originally. Juneau actually has warmer winters than much of the country. It usually stays around 20-40 degrees. It's on the coast, not as cold as the interior.

ahh I see. That is a pretty warm winter. Last winter here in Connecticut we had about a week where the wind chill brought it to between 20-35 below. It was crazy.

The challenge has been a challenge. I was down to about $20 a couple days ago but I won my next 2 SnG's to get back to about $300. My performance in 30/3 is off the charts. But after playing about 40 20/2 SnG's I'm losing money on the 20/2. I have no doubt that there is a lot of variance, but for whatever reason the moves I make at 30 seem to work out while the ones I make at 20 haven't. Over the last couple days I lost a couple SnG's because I was too tight and too passive. Really, I just wanted to see if I could play them too tight. I played a couple that way, but it's much closer to right than I had been previously. Tough beats from last night:

NL $25, 6 max. I have AK. A raising volley ensues. $5 preflop, here we go. Flop comes 2s kc 3d. I raise a $3 bet to $6. He calls. Turn: As. He bets $5, I raise all in. He calls. River: 6s. He hits a runner runner flush to beat my AAKK. Ugh. Oh well, earlier I won an all-in pot short stacked when my 99 beat a 10/10 by hitting a flush. Party loves to dole out the flushes, especially runner runner ones.

Anway I've almost cleared my $100 bonus and I already bought my first bit of equipment. A $35 dollar pair of snowboard boots for my wife. Plan of a attack will be to play enough .50-1 to clear my bonus and play 1 or 2 $30 SnG's a night until Nov 5. They've been working so I'll either win or lose by them.

Starting BR: $390
Now: $170
Bonus to clear: $100
Days to Go: 9
Goal: $800
$$ Needed: $530

Can't wait to get flamed for using the bonus in this challenge. Cheers!
