Stay at home dad/poker player..... is it possible?

What type of "salaries" are we talking here??
Something to supplement the wife's 6 figure income, or are you guys the major breadwinners for the family?

I feel so guilty when my toddler vies for my attention and I'm busy locked into a blinds battle with AJs... ("one second, sweetheart, let me raise this mutherf^#^@"). I can't imagine being a stay-at-home dad poker pro.

Hell, we should have our own group! I do it too. Mainly low limit bonus stuff but it brings in about 2000 a month and I get to spend a lot of time with my kids. I wouldn't trade it for anything.

Thanks to skyrocketing commuting costs, time, and a slashed bonus, I am playing poker in the interim of deciding what to do with my life.

I will probably figure out what I want to do shortly. The poker winnings have given me the option of winging it.

A couple of thoughts:

- Watching a kid isn't the easiest thing to do and you won't be able to play non-stop during the day. It is the best thing though to spend time with your kid, more emotional compensation than anything.

- Alot less stressful than 3 hours on the road everyday though.

- If you have another steady income in the family it is alot easier, although week one has been great, made alot more already than a week at work and less hours and no commute. This is no guarentee of future results though.

My thinking now is taking a few weeks to relax and my thinking now and finding a stress free job. Maybe 25-35 hours/week (& small commute) if I can find someone who is looking for that?

Well it is 4:10PM and haven't not played a hand of poker yet, but it has been a great day. The day is still is young, no work obligations and plenty of rest. Sportscenter in the morning doesn't wear you down too much.

If you are good enough to win what you think you or would make at a job somewhere (remember to account for benefits you won't be getting) then sure. Having a wife with a decent job for when you run bad doesn't hurt.

Just me, and I make more than I did when I was working 10 hours a night, 4 nights a week.

I make it a point to never play while she's awake, I'm mostly a tournament player, so it only takes one distraction at the wrong time. I pay a babysitter for 25 hours a week, and I am able to get in another 25-35 hours a week while she is asleep, with her mom, or at grandma's.

I have a relationship with my daughter that is unlike any other father's that I know, and I am sure that it has everything to do with the time I am able to spend with her. It's a great situation that is working out very well for us.

as has been mentioned many times here as well as in the foreward of SSHE....making $1k/wk playing just 4 tables of 3/6 is VERY possible.

3/6 at 1BB/hr = $6/hr
Play 4 tables plus get some extra for money and bonuses and you are easily into $25/hr range.
$25/hr X 40 hours = $1k/week

If you can play 6-8 tables of 3/6 then you can push $1500-$2000 per week (especially with rake-back and bonuses).

There are 10/20 and 15/30 4-tables (and 6-8 tablers) who are making well over $100/hour.

Obviously, it helps if you are actually good enough to consistently beat the game in the first place!!


But there's no reason why a dedicated 3/6 multi-tabler can't make AT LEAST $50k/year.

I think it depends mostly on whether or not you are blessed with good-natured little angels or ADHD-afflicted deviant little miscreants.

Also, if you were to make the final table of an important MTT, you might find yourself having to go absent if one of the tots begins projectile vomiting after eating something that didn't agree with her (while also having had "Orange Drink" with that).

This is one of the major reasons I haven't considered trying to be a "pro" (the other being that I'm a $250/week low/micro hack). I don't tend to play while my 18-month-old daughter is awake, because a) I feel guilty about not spending time with her and b) She's a lot more unpredictable now than she was a year ago when she was just starting to crawl. She's "helped" me play poker a few times, raising with 94o when she decides it's time to bang on the keyboard and suchlike.

If I were to only play while she's asleep and still want to play 25-ish hours a week, I'd have to take to playing overnight or early afternoon, at sub-optimal times. And since her naps aren't uniform yet, it'd definitely be ring games instead of tournies -- not much of a problem, since I'm a pretty terrible tourney player anyway.

For the forseeable future, poker's a hobby and a source of a little extra mad money.
