Re: JJ with 2 Overcards
[ QUOTE ]
Horrible. Bet the flop. No reason to slowplay. There are draws out there and you need them to call. If you get raised, all the better, you can 3-bet. Again, bet the damn turn. You are last to act, and have the best hand over 80% of the time. Given that you played so damn passive, you induced extra action on the river. Cap it up! You have them crushed almost always. TQ, KK, AA have you beat, that is it. I doubt anyone has those. [/ QUOTE ] I was trying to get more action into the hand. I am new to shorthand, but I enjoy all of your responses with harsh criticism. It will help me to remember for the next time. |

Re: JJ with 2 Overcards
Everyone is quite opinionated on these forums. The criticism you are receiving is not especially harsh so try not to take it the wrong way. Learn from it and get better.
All of the other posters are correct here. It almost feels like you are trying to play a couple of your hands like it were a no-limit slow-play at the final-table of a televised tournament. This is limit poker and things change dramatically strategy-wise. As I mentioned in your other hand....you very much need to read SSHE. Based on your ideas of extracting more value by checking I'm doubting that you have read it. Keep reading and learning. It's obvious that you are trying to do what you think is right and are just attempting to extract value and not scare your opponents away...but you really need to lose this line of thinking. In this hand...your opponents could have had a wide range of hands that they would have felt compelled to call you down with. Additionally, since you raised pre-flop they could have every right to be suspicious of your flop-bet as being just a general continuation bet. You raised pre-flop...your opponents are expecting you to bet anyway and won't be surprised when you do. They'll think that you might have AK or 66 or any other possible holding. They have no idea that you have a monster. Now that you got to the river...you missed your chance to actually extract the value you were attempting to get. There is zero reason to not cap the river here. The chances of you losing this hand is extremely remote and calling down is missing a bet. |

The two overcards scared me in this situation. [/ QUOTE ] You really need to take a hard look at your game. Not betting the flop is really bad. The turn check is worse. Once, I used to pull crap like this too. You're killing yourself by not betting these hands. Let's take a hand I played today: Texas Hold'em $3-$6 (real money), hand #1,570,827,297 Table Lansing, 9 Dec 2005 11:20 PM ET Seat 3: loseone ($282.25 in chips) Seat 4: Fish2 x ($241.60 in chips) Seat 9: girldawg ($79.65 in chips) Seat 10: Hero [ KH,AH ] ($397.90 in chips) ANTES/BLINDS girldawg posts blind ($1.50), Hero posts blind ($3). PRE-FLOP loseone bets $6, Fish2 x calls $6, girldawg calls $4.50, Hero bets $6, loseone calls $3, Fish2 x calls $3, girldawg calls $3. FLOP [board cards QC,10S,JH ] girldawg checks, Hero bets $3, loseone calls $3, Fish2 x calls $3, girldawg bets $6, Hero bets $6, loseone calls $6, Fish2 x calls $6, girldawg calls $3. TURN [board cards QC,10S,JH,3D ] girldawg checks, Hero bets $6, loseone bets $12, Fish2 x folds, girldawg calls $12, Hero bets $12, loseone bets $12, girldawg calls $12, Hero calls $6. RIVER [board cards QC,10S,JH,3D,6H ] girldawg checks, Hero bets $6, loseone bets $12, girldawg calls $12, Hero bets $12, loseone bets $12, girldawg calls $12, Hero calls $6. SHOWDOWN loseone shows [ 3C,3S ] girldawg shows [ 8D,9D ] Hero shows [ KH,AH ] Hero wins $214.80. SUMMARY Dealer: Fish2 x Pot: $216 | Rake: $1.20 loseone loses $66 Fish2 x loses $18 girldawg loses $66 Hero bets $66, collects $214.80, net $148.80 Notice fast playing worked. I could show you hundreds more like it too. |

Re: JJ with 2 Overcards
I should also mention that 'new to shorthand' play as Italian mentions isn't really much of an excuse here.
The way this hand was played would be equally incorrect on full-ring. |
