Default Any painter\'s in here??

Looking to purchase some cheap canvas for my girlfriend for x-mas. She is not a serious painter, but does enjoy doing it when she has the time, and the canvas to paint on.

My question is, where do you painter's get your canvas from? anywhere online? I'm looking to spend about $40-50 for some decent canvas.

You should really just ask her (Bring it up conversationally), or go to an art supply store nearby and ask an associate (Use the Yellow Pages).

Unless, of course, SpicyF makes an appearance in this thread, then you can take his advice in good faith.

Well, I think prestretched so that they are just ready to be worked on. By unstretched do they mean that it comes in a roll??

If so, then pre-stretched will do.

i assume you really don't want to ask her ?

i like this kind, but i just paint for hobby:
http://www.jerrysartarama.com/discou...art-supplies/6
there are no staples on the sides which is very nice. quality should definitely be ok for someone who is not a serious painter. good price too.

i like 3/4 edge , but 1.5+ is considered 'gallery' edge.

it really depends.

something around 16x20 or 18x24 are good sizes if you are unsure what.

on this site most canvas comes in boxes of 3 or 6 , but it is cheaper that way.

dickblick.com is also a good place to buy, and they sell them individually. so you could get a few different sizes. prices are probably not as cheap though, i haven't bought art supplies in awhile so i don't know for sure which has better deals.

She paints purely as a hobby. She did paint me something, which I have haning on my wall. It's about 20x16. This is about the size I've seen her use before.

Thanks for your help!!

Damn. I'm a painter and I thought this was going to be a "post your paintings" brag thread or something. You really dissapointed me here, OP.

The cheapest way to go about it is to buy the canvas unstretched and buy the frame and stretch it yourself. This also has the plus of you making the canvas whatever size/shape you'd like. All you need is a staplegun, and the frame pieces can be bought dirt cheap.
