Katrina and New Orleans...

Ok- so New Orelans as a city is 10 ft below sea level, and the storm sure may come over top of the levies. So if this happens i assume that the water from the storm surege/rain will have to be pumped out- will this be feasible- are the mechanisms in place to even begin to deal with this? If the storm is bad enough could a potion of new orleans become just a reef in the Gulf?

They were just sayingthe water could be in the "bowl" for weeks. Not good.

One problem is that there won't be sufficient means to pump water out if (when?) they lose power.

Someone on the news said that this has the makings to be the single greatest natural disaster to hit the US in our lifetimes.

New Orleans has a system of pumps to get rid of water in bad floods, however this is gonna be horrible. The levees will probably break which will make this a much more difficult issue.

New Orleans is heavily catholic, not protestant.

That, and the fact that the pumps will almost certainly be submerged for some time due to the projected 25 ft. storm surge.

The power went out earlier, the pumps are already off (what genius decided backup generators shouldn't be used for the pumps? Or making them diesel rather than electric?)

And one levee was breached over 30 minutes ago, the superdome is leaking/missing some roof, and the brunt of the storm hasn't made it to them yet.

supplies will be needed.manpower and equipment be needed. food,water and power will be needed.sant. and med. supplies be needed. people will be homeless and the suffering will be great....crime sadly will accompany the people,miltary will have hands full and the gov't sent more soldiers out!!
