Default Technicality with check written amount..

Someone wrote me a check for $2,950 but spelled it out "Two thousand and fifty dollars." The intended amount was $2,950 and I imagine this will be a problem. However, getting another check would also be a huge hassle. We have different banks.. is there a way to have my bank confirm the check amount from him or his bank? How else can I handle this?

I imagine if you attempt to cash it they will have to verify the amount with his bank or something....

Have you taken it to the bank yet? Does the spelled-out amount override the numerical amount? Do they choose the smaller of the two when they are different?

It's possible they'll cash it for $2950. I would take it in and see what they say, obviously not leaving without either the check or $2950.

The spelled out amount always overrides the numerical amount. Also if that check is drawn on another bank and its for that much money they will probably make you deposit it until it clears so they can verify that its good. Thats how the bank I used to work for (BankOne/Chase) handled that. You can try to slip it through and hope the teller doesnt check the written amount vs. the numerical amount but with a check that large they are probably going to pay a little more attention. Try to get another check. GoodLuck

Written amount is more important than numerical. I once had a check written to me for $120.65 but they person wrote one hundred twenty and 00/100 so the bank screwed me out of my 65 cents. I was so pissed.

$900 > $0.65

Get a new check, an additional check, or eat $900.

The bank didn't screw you out of it. Your cheap-ass friend did.
