don't usually post this kind of stuff but I found this pretty interesting.

Libertarian candidate for Public Advocate Jim Lesczynski announced today that the No Poker, No Peace Penny Poker Tournament will be played at the entrance to One Police Plaza beginning at 6 p.m. on the evening of Thursday, July 14. The tournament, which will be preceded by a 5:30 p.m. press conference, will protest the NYPD's recent raid of two popular Manhattan poker clubs and the wrongful seizure of $100,000 in players' money.

Sounds interesting. Will the police be arresting people during THIS tournament?

I'll try to be there.

The US Government has been robbing the people for a long time. Now they do it at gunpoint. Ya.

Don't know if, I'll go to this, but I certainly know who I'm voting for, for public advocate.

I have a friend who was there during the raids I'm wondering if I should go "represent" while he's in vegas

This libertarian guy is just doing it to get publicity and won't ever have a chance of winning anything.

If you want poker to be legal in NYC, form a PAC and lobby the state legislature.

Forming a PAC is probably pretty easy. It is here in Mass, all you need to do is file paperwork.

There are going to be enough rich people in NYC that one or two of them who play poker can get you bankrolled enough to get a little publicity and perhaps then you can raise more money to hire a professional lobbyist.

Legalizing gambling in NYC would not be a good thing for those of us that live near NYC and enjoy it. I like NYC. I don't like Atlantic City, except to go to and gamble at, it is a dive and when gambling was legalized there (20?) years ago, it certainly took a turn for the worse. Online gambling is one thing, I am all in favor of the US legalizing and then heavily regulating online gambling. But legalizing gambling in a city such as NY would cause all kinds of problems that the city doesn't need. IMO. Plus, I really think some of these people are going to get arrested, and this is goiing to be broken up almost immediately, just a warning. And while some would argue correctly that poker isn't "gambling" in the same sense that blackjack is, for the majority, upwards of 90 percent of people who play poker, it is gambling (A -EV game that can result in short-term profits but inevitably results in long term deficit), and having it legal in a big city such as NY would have the same effects as having a regular casino.

I personally would prefer a casino on the west side of manhattan than a sports stadium. But I think the police should turn a blind eye to poker playing in these clubs. Similarly, I think police should turn a blind eye to marijuana use/possession, and I think they do to some extent. I think there are a lot of police officers that don't want to bother arresting someone smoking pot on the street, and I'm sure they feel the same way about poker clubs. I know someone who lost $17K because of the raids, and that is a shame. The "broken windows" theory I don't think works when persecuting innocent crimes.

The police HAVE been turning a blind eye to poker, the busts had nothing to do with them. They are just following orders.

Any bill that decriminalizes poker is going to include taxation, regulation, and licensing so there won't be a casino opening up on every streetcorner.

But you can't tell me that the big fancy schmancy hotels wouldn't like to have a poker room for their wealthy guests. It would be an additional amenity with a high coolness factor and it would bring in some cash.

I think if someone did create a PAC and carefully drafted a bill, you'd get some significant financial support from a lot of places.
