Default Ugly board with a set.... call or raise?

$20 BI, 180SnG on Stars. Villain, from what I have seen, is mediocre at best and fairly easy to read.

PokerStars No-Limit Hold'em Tourney, Big Blind is t20 (9 handed) FTR converter on zerodivide.cx

MP3 (t1580)
CO (t1880)
Button (t1380)
(Villain)/ (t2800)
BB (t1470)
Hero (t980)
UTG+1 (t1690)
MP1 (t4160)
MP2 (t1320)

Preflop: Hero is UTG with 8[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img], 8[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img].
Hero calls t20, 6 folds, SB(Villain) raises to t40, 1 fold, Hero calls t20.

Flop: (t100) 8[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img], J[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img], 6[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] (2 players)
Villain bets t40, Hero raises to t120, Villain calls t80.

Turn: (t340) K[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] (2 players)</font>
Villain checks, Hero checks.

River: (t340) T[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] (2 players)
Villain bets t320, Hero...

FWIW, I was fairly certain on the turn that he DIDN'T have the flush, and didn't bet since he was folding all the weaker hands at that point while if I could convince him I didn't have the flush either I could still get one more bet on the river.

Comments, as always, appreciated.

Kirk

Default Re: Ugly board with a set.... call or raise?

You have to bet the turn because he could have one club, and because there are straight draws. There are way too many ways the board can get scarier, and if it does you're either beat or not getting paid off. The way you played it, call, because "raise flop, check behind, raise a potsized river bet" screams flush or straight, so there is no way he pays you off with a worse hand and very little chance you fold out a better one. Call and kick yourself for letting Q9 get there.
