I am curious, when the tsunami disaster hit in Thailand and Sri Lanka was there any report of looting or mugging? It seems to me that there were lot of opportunities for poor people (the locals) to steal from the wealthy tourists.

There was nothing left to loot. As many as 250,000 people died in the Tsunami. You really can't compare the two.
