I have only played one orbit at this Party 15 table and find myself in the BB with Jh8h. UTG open raises and 5 people coldcall so I gladly go ahead and call the extra 15.

I check (hoping for a checkraise to get the pot heads up or threehanded (It is possible to dream right), UTG bets, and EVERYBODY calls, What? No LAGs raising this pot, Whats the deal, It comes back to you in the BB, What is your play?

You're in the BB. UTG raises and gets 5 coldcallers and you expect a c/r will allow you to isolate UTG, who is sitting directly to your left? I think you're not getting something fundamental here.

Check-raising does not have a mystical ability to make people fold their hands. Sometimes it works to force people to fold or call two cold. Sometimes it works to build a pot by having them call one and then one or two more.

The obvious benefit to raising is UTG 3 betting and thinning the field.

I just go ahead and bet.....probably harder to call 2 cold then it is to call 2 bets on top of the one you've already called......does that make sense??

So your plan failed and you couldn't C/R to isolate a late position better.

I think it's best if you will just call. The nature of the PP 15/30 is that if they called 1 bet, they're gonna call more. You have a lot of overcards on the turn that will ruin your hand, so your pot equity is not so good given the number of callers on the flop. Wait and see what the turn brings.

I think Ed covers something similar to this in SSH dealing with pot equity.

trying to cr the pfr here only works if you have a big draw or a made hand. pair of eights with a jack isnt quite the same. what happens when a queen comes on the turn, do you lead out or just call down? you made this hand hard on yourself. id lead the flop and if the utg raiser raises you, you are in much better position to have your eights hold up.

Having checked the flop, you should raise. Although there are certainly many turn cards that can come that you won't like, there are many that you will. You have an above-average hand in this pot, get the money in now.

If UTG 3-bets and gets a few folds, that's fine too.

All that said, you should have bet the flop if UTG is aggressive enough to raise with a hand you can beat.

This is a very marginal hand. You may be ahead now but you have at least 1/3 of the deck that you have to dodge on the turn and river for you hand to stand up on the end.

I think that the best line is to bet out and hope for UTG to raise his overcards. Even then any callers behind are getting 8.5:1, so they may call with a lot of stuff on this flop, but you might get some overcards to fold, improving your chances of winning. If UTG has an overpair you still likely have 5 outs.

Checkraising here has a 0% chance of reducing the field. It just gives everybody better odds to draw out on you.

Having checked the flop, just call and see what the turn brings.
