Default problem playing video files on my computer

I'm pretty computer illiterate and I am hoping someone here can tell me how to fix this problem.

The problem is, whenever I try to play a video file that is .avi format on my computer (using Windows media player, divx, or realplayer) the file plays but it seems that the image is zoomed in about 500%. The video plays normally except for the fact that I cant see the whole picture.

I have tried downloading programs that convert the avi files into another format but that hasnt worked. I also just tried downloading the newest version of WMP to no avail.

I am using windows xp.

Thanks in advance for your help.

-Steve

Download VLC media player. It comes with pretty much every codec there is, and has been able to play anything I've ever downloaded.

...still no luck, same problem as before, its all zoomed it (its not the file either as it does this for all avi files)

I fixed it. I went to display properties > advanced > changed 'DPI' to large size.

Thanks for your suggestions.

Use this program to tell what codec the file is using:

You may want to uninstall / reinstall the codec that it's using.

I find this codec pack one of the best IMO:

don't install unnecessary codecs, I've heard people having problems doing that. Each time you have a video that won't play, figure out what codec you need and get that one in particular.
