I would not even agree that Texas Hold'em is the best poker variant.

I like five-card no-draw. It is awesome.

In my opinion, it's 7 card stud, and I'm primarily a limit hold'em player. Here's why:

* Slightly better balance of luck and skill. The fish survive longer. (Hold'em punishes players a little too harshly for continuing past the flop with inadequate values.)

* Great players have a bigger edge over merely good players in stud. I think this is why you see stud games spread at higher stakes than pure limit hold'em games.

* Stud is less mechanical than hold'em since you have to be aware of the upcards. Compare 3rd street in stud to preflop in hold'em. In hold'em, playing the first two cards is easy. You can play by a chart and do OK. Stud you have to think on 3rd street.

* I personally find stud more fun. I like being able to read hands in stud. The upcards give me more information. I like how hands develop independently. I like how the cards come out one at a time instead of in a rush like hold'em.

Just my opinion. It's a shame the game is dying.
