Is bubbles still out???
I was there in May and he had just come back to work then. I was there the night he came back and there was a steady stream of people coming up to him telling him how glad they were to see him back. I went up to him after his time at my table and shook his hand and told him I was glad to see him back and there were a lot of people who had been thinking about him and he really appreciated that! A real nice guy and a class act. He seemed to be really glad to be back although he wasn't 100% yet.

I haven't been back out there since then so something may have changed but he was definitly back in May.

This thread clarifies the difference between casual palyers and "serious" players. In the very smallest games the players liek the dealers to be entertaining. As you move up in limits the players find the dealer's banter and attempts at soliciting tokes to be intrusive.

Bubbles is a really great guy; he is also on my list of not so good dealers. For the $2-$6 that is normal at Excaliber he deals just fine. Around 2000 there was a 10-20 game there and when he game into the box he irritated the players by doign his same act. Another player finaly told him "just shut the f*** up and deal." As you move up in limits dealing accurate, mistake free poker becomes far more important than "being friendly." The other problem with being overly friendly is that when the dealer is chatting or whatever with one player it can give the appearance to someone thinking about sitting down that the dealer is friends with one of the players and can scare off a potential player.

Yeah, I like my dealers efficient, courteous and quiet. Declare the action, say a pleasant thank-you for a toke but otherwise be invisible.

This is the "correct" procedure. Dealers have foudn in certain games tehy make more money if they talke about football or whatever is on the TV.

This statement is unfair. Not only is this not "the difference" between
casual and serious players, it implies insult to LLHE/SS players. If you
play 50/100 for your meals and child-support, fine; I support your
right to a sterile (boring) serious job. If I want to "seriously" play in a
low limit game with jovial drunks handing out money then, yeah, I
like a dealer who contributes to that atmosphere.

I always enjoy your informative and intelligent posts Randy, but
this post has an air of arrogance whether intended or not. I would
venture to say that the overwhelming majority of posters here would
fall short of the high-stakes levels and might be insulted that you
feel they do not take their hobby, second-job, passion or even full-time
job "seriously" simply because they aim to keep their "customers" happy
and gambling.

Now, if anyone has anymore un-serious stories...

I have seen quite a few fun games turn ugly when the "happy drunk's" flush card comes back beascue the dealer wasn't paying attention to how many players were in the pot and burned and turned too quickly. Everyone that sutdies teh game understands that happens and is part of the game, but teh plyer that was happy to lose money is now upset that he "got screwed." I feel that low limit palyers are at least as entitles to an accurately dealt game as high limit players and dealers make too many mistakes when they talk in the box. The very best dealers will acknowledge a joke etc while shuffling the cards, but once they pitch a card they are serious and paying attention.

Someone I worked for years ago told me about a dealer that dealt at the Horseshoe. She was known for being chatty and making mistakes in the box. Then during the WSOP she dealt flawlessly to players that weren't tipping her in a high limit game. She then went back to small games and made mistakes for the palyers that actually pay for her dealing.

There is nothing wrong with the dealer contributing to a fun atmosphere as long as they don't make mistakes AND don't comment on the game (violating 1 player to a hand). Comments like "look out squeaky is in" or "we've got a big pot here" draw attention to certain aspects fo the game that it is the player's responsibility to watch.

Mason used to have a really good essay on this site about "Talking Dealers." I think it shoudl be required reading for every new dealer entering this industry.

Yea, and he's on my list of Best F#@&!%$ Dealers Who ever Walked the Planet Earth. #1 in my book.

I've played from $2-4 to $80-160 and I'll take the Bubble man in my game any day.

I'm also a big fan of Gates at Wynn and Jimmy at the Orleans. YMMV.

Bubbles came back for a while but his hnd was hurting him. To the best of my knowledge, he is gone for good.

Please list for me the dealing mistakes you've seen Bubbles make besides, apparently, being too nice. He's dealt thousands of hands to me and I don't think he's ever exposed one of my cards, screwed up the action or lost his place in the game. Some [censored] telling somebody to "shut the [censored] up and deal" doesn't reflect poorly on the dealer; it reflects poorly on the prick who said it.
