Laborer for any contractor. Good pay, brains optional, develop muscles (skills) on the job.

Don't they all really???

I too have *those* friends that have been "going back to school" for the last 4 years...

UPS, make a career of it, be done. Every area seems to have large labor available, we have a huge Sony plant, UPS and FedEx plants here, surely something like that is available.

if he's skilled at all I'm guessing he would be working in some trade. but if he has any carpentry, drywall, or painting experience he could always tag on with a contracting group and then start his own business after a year or so. I was pretty close to doing this myself, but I've decided I want to make money.

UPS or Fed Ex would be the best bets on that list by far!!!
Did you know drivers for UPS make like 60-70k per year supposedly?

[/ QUOTE ]

UPS drivers can make that much ($23+/hr with lots of overtime) and they have great benefits too. Problem is, in the short term he likely won't get hired for this highly sought after job. UPS only hires new people as part-time employees at $8.50 /hr in very physical jobs. It frequently takes several years to to become full-time at UPS but part-timers get full benefits.

Its a good company but they drive their people hard; I was recently told that the average tenure for a newly hired package handler (the main entry-level spot) is 15 days.

To the OP, if your buddy can make it past the first 60 days or so at UPS, the benefits are quite good, there is decent advancement potential and they will pay 20k+ for college so its a good deal.

It's very physical work so the hiring process truly consists of them taking a group of people on a tour of the plant and doing everything they can to talk you out of interviewing. I gather that most anyone who wants to work there after the "recruiters" put the fear of god in you is allowed to start working.
